As a blacksmith in at a museum, Thank Youy for the story. You tell the story with a very good air of honor to both the old man and yourself. Many times the talkers in the crowd are full of hot air, those people make us appreciate the ones that really understand our craft.

my understanding of the hippo sandal was the were used by the armys for crossing hot sand. as to not burn the frog and mak the horse sore. The metal sandals were precedide by ones woven from fibers. they were not left on for long periods. that is the understanding I have on these shoes. Dave that is a good looking shoe .

Niel Saftey glasses were not available during your time period. But thank you for your concern about staying true to the intrpretive costume. Your site should be glad that you are concios enough to investigate it. As a professional historical interpretor I will tell you that many dont. It is your sites reponsability to let the public know that they were not available, and that some staff may be using modern saftey equipment to conform with todays saftey standards and requirments.
