  1. @kingsjohn: thanks for the info. not a bad idea about trying the brass brushed first. @ John McPherson:I was only intending to do the folding up after the brushing, the main part of shaping and texturing would be done before brushing with the hope that it would stand up enough. And had postulated that I could rebrush the accessible parts after position and shape adjustments. As far as the copper treatments, I wouldn't want to alter the copper color chemically, let time and mama nature handle that. The stem and leaves I am pretty well set on making out of steel. The only part I am contemplating using copper for is the flower's petals.
  2. I have a project idea. I want to make my daughter an earring tree, but make it a tulip instead. The idea is the have little holes punched/drilled thru the edges of the leaves for her earings to attach thru and the tulip flower to be a small bowl for loose items. The base would be a shallow bowl shape also, with three tabs scrolled under for feet. My question is this... Should I make the flower out of copper sheet or steel? I figure if I use steel I'll brush the hot flower piece with a brass brush before forming it into shape. Any suggestions, comments or opinions will be read and taken into consideration.
  3. Had to pull the pic up to see. It wasn't my anvil. But upon looking at the pic, it's a magnet. It has a bunch of metal bits and such stuck to it.
  4. I've seen lots of Champion spiral gear blowers that looked exactly the same with the only exception being the end where the air comes out. most were just tube ends.
  5. Thanks guys. Thanks Kevin, I still intend to get by there. I just haven't had a free day til today.

As I noted on the other pic of this hammer... I apparently mislabeled this. This is actually the Right quarter pein end.

It has been pointed out to me that I mislabeled this... This is in fact the left quarter pein end.
  8. I have one of those I found in a storage container my wife and I inherited from her Grandfather. I haven't taken mine apart as it turns very easily doesn't clank or seem to grind and puts out a boot-load of air. It's missing the bracket piece that goes on the back-side of the pipe it attaches to and the handle isn't original. So in the end, I can't help with info on rebuilding... just neat that I have finally found someone with the same style one. None of the others I have seen online mount that way. I'm sure they're out there, I just haven't seen them.
  9. I went to my first ever blacksmith group forge meeting. Met some great people, learned a lot and made the following items (pictures below): 2 nails 2 matching(sorta, they're about an 1/8" off in length :( ) brass brushed wall nail hook leaf tipped wall nail hook leaf tipped hanging hook (fits a pot rack we have in our kitchen) Both leaves brushed with brass wire brush. All hooks were rubbed warm with beeswax. I had so much fun and learned so much. If I hadn't been hooked before... making these hooks have guarranteed it. I left all but the end hanging leaf hook with them for them to sell at an event they'll be demonstrating at next weekend. http://www.iforgeiron.com/uploads/gallery/category_23/gallery_28530_23_135807.jpg http://www.iforgeiron.com/uploads/gallery/category_23/gallery_28530_23_3858.jpg
  10. I got my double-quarter pein finished. It took me about twenty minutes of grinding with my 4 1/2" grinder and ten more polishing as best I could with my dremel. I also dressed the faces of my new-to-me 4# hammer. I took them with me to my first ever forge meeting... I love them! They move the metal so easily compared to what I was using before, which was the 3# Estwing I ground down into my double-quarter-pein. Here are pics. http://www.iforgeiron.com/gallery/image/37014-rtqtrpeinend/ http://www.iforgeiron.com/gallery/image/37012-ltqtrpeinend/ http://www.iforgeiron.com/gallery/image/37013-myhammers/

Left Quarter Pein end of the double-quarter pein I turned an Estwing hammer into, it started at 3#. Not sure the finished weight.
  16. @ rt: Those are sweet looking hammers. I went ahead and peeked at some of the other hammer pics you had in your gallery, that quad pein is cool. Is it actually functional? I mean, I know it will work as a hammer, but do the peins on each side get in the way? I have a hammer I think just might be a candidate for this project. I'll see what I can accomplish and post a pic or two.
  17. Hmmm, I wonder if standing it on end in a bucket of cement and grinding the corners off to lessen the likelihood of spalling off chunks when using it would be a good idea for how to set it up as an anvil...
  18. At least it's "Hot" pink.
  19. Heat some steel and hammer on each... then decide based on which one feels best to you...? Just my simple opinion.
  20. Don't count myself a blacksmith yet... still haven't learned enough to qualify, imho. Just a neophyte. Hoping to attain that one day.
  21. Hehehe, but yeah, having the two peins twisted opposite directions would save me from having to switch hands between fullering lengthwise or crosswise. Instead of switching hands, just flip the other end of the hammer head down and voila.
  22. @Glenn: The reason I am saying a L on one end and a R on the other is that held with one end down it would be a diagonal cross pein, just flip it over and it magically transforms into a diagonal straight pein. :D Btw, I am right handed. @Timothy Miller: Sir, I am sure you know quite a lot more than I do. And I respect that. In explaination, I was thinking grinding instead of forging because I only have a small self-made coal forge, a couple cheap hand nammers, a decent (imho) anvil and a few other hand tools. No one to strike for me, or for me to strike for either. But mainly because I have NOT been a professional blacksmith for twenty years but instead been a professional full-time electronics technician for over twenty years. So I have not yet acquired the huge array of knowledge nor the selection of tools such as that hard hitting powerhammer in your profile picture. (Insert picture of the green monster 'jealousy' here. haha) . Now if I could use a soldering iron to do the job... I'd be sittin' pretty. But serious question here... do you think that with the limitations I mentioned it would be easier for me to forge than grind? If so, then I will try. I appreciate all the comments and links (thanks rt). I, like so many others have posted... have learned so much from this forum and am proud to be included as a member with so many talented and learned craftsmen (no that is not backside kissing, just honestly how I feel). Oh, and I'm happy to say that I get my first chance to meet face-to-face with other blacksmiths tomorrow. (Want a laugh? Picture a 6'2", 245#. balding, overweight 42 yr old man excited like a kid the day before his first day in kindergarten. My wife just grins and shakes her head.) Please note that I mean no disrespect with my attempts at humor. I fully respect the people here.
  23. D'oh! I should have thought of Harbor Freight... got several of them around here.
  24. I was thinking of trying to find a quarter pein with a Left quarter on one end and a Right quarter on the other. But I need it at a reasonable (if not bargain) price, lol. My financial budget for what is currently only a hobby (read as addiction) is not able to support spending a lot. I've looked for examples of this online and in the forums here, but have had no success. Any suggestions? I've even contemplated trying to forge my own... I have several pieces of 2" round axle material in 4-8" lengths. I know I don't have the resources/help to fully forge it, would have to take shortcuts like grinding the ends to shape and drilling the majority of the handle hole, only heating and forging the elongating and tapering of it. Am I insane for even thinking this?
  25. My understanding is that rebound is more important than ring.
