  1. It's a geological tool.?! Estwing Cross Peen Hammers
  2. $38 from grainger that has free shipping for orders over $50 this month. Estwing also makes a 2.5lb cross pien. I've grown up with Estwing framing hammers in my hand. I can remember when I was 7 sitting on a jobsite with my dad and him showing me how to make a bench to sit on and eat lunch with wood from the scrap pile. I go on a church misson trip with high school teenagers every summer to work on homes in Appalachia. The kids always think its cute to bring some joke of a hammer that they swiped from moms junk drawer or dad gives them the hammer he kinda wants to never come back home. After day one and "hammering 101" the kids realize Mr. Chris's hammer (Estwing) is much easier on the hand and drives nails faster than what they brought. After that I have to fight to use my own hammer. I finally bought a spare just so I have a better chance of getting one to use.
  3. I saw at hammer source that they called rounding hammers rounding/linesmans hammers. Is this just a renamed rounding hammer? Estwing Lineman's Hammer
  4. This guy probably took this anvil somewhere where he was offered $450-500 for it. He ******** took it home and a friend/relative convinced him he was being low balled and they decided it is worth ten times that amount.
  5. Very nice. How much does it weigh?
  6. The father inlaw is a hoarder. Owns two acres and 5 Farmall H tractors, a Case 530 backhoe, 4 boats, 5 trailers, a school bus packed full of 60's ford car parts, a VW powered trike, and 4 sheds packed to the doorway, and a three car garage with "walking paths" If you mention your looking for something he'll say "I have on of those in stock." Will he part with it? Nope. It often bites him in the rear, last summer his boat winch broke (electric) he knew he had one "in stock" but couldnt find it. So he gos and buys one. A couple days later I'm helping him dig out a shed. I come arcoss 4 electric boat winches. It was hard not to laugh.
  7. Cant wait to see what you create with that forge!
  8. Cut off the part I dont like and reuse whats left.
  9. I have a brother that works for a large turf farm. He gave me some reel mower blade blanks that are made from Sheffield #10 steel. Can I forge this stuff without ruining its properties? Or should I just use a stock removal method?
  10. I remember reading somewhere that they were good anvils. Looks like they have changed to a new name. http://www.ratholeforge.com/index.htm
  11. If you get the Sunday paper the coupon/comic section usually has an ad for the big box craft stores here in MD that's Michaels and AC Moore. Typically it's 40% off. You can get a big ole brick of basic modeling clay for less than $5 that way. I found out you really only need a play dough containers worth to figure out most stuff.

  15. Natural charcoal will get you to welding heat easy. You may want to consider reading the Corn forge thread that was recently discussed. Natural charcoal is going to be the easiest to procure. Most wally-world and big box home repair places that sell grilling stuff have natural charcoal. My local True Value stocks natural charcoal year round. I picked up a 20lb bag of Cowboy brand last night, however thats for my Big Green Egg.
  16. Found this with a quick google search. Chip forge V's Regular forge - British Blades :: Custom Knife Making
  17. Let the spoiling begin! Congrats!
  18. I had a dedicated corn stove for two winters. It kicked out some serious heat. Clinker was an issue and the exhaust had a delightful smell very similar to burned microwave popcorn. I got rid of it once the local grain elevators started to only sell corn in $5.00 50lb bags vs. the 66lb bushel at market price that at the time was around $3.50 One would need a electric blower from what I've seen corn is like coke and needs that constant air.
  19. A #5 or larger fly press could do that cold. I know my S5 could w/o a problem. Just make your tooling out of HDPE to not mess up the texture. And bump away. You could do the same with a hyd shop press. You'll need to make a jig. All that needs to happen is the piece is set on two parallel rounds that are secured to a plate about 6" apart and you bump it in between the two rounds. Measure out and mark every 2" on the material and run the stock thru hitting that mark. After two passes you should see an arch forming.
  20. Dodge my above post will how the Hoffman burner system. That title carried over from the older thread.

  22. What is the dia of the spring stock? 1/4? maybe 3/8? You can get a 20' "stick" of that from a metal supplier for $10. Toss that galvanized metal in the trash.
