  1. Maybe his wife will answer the phone, then you can tell her you want to buy it and is he available to talk. She, if like most wives will tell to get rid of the junk. :D . Other option is to show up with the CASH in hand. Good luck smith out
  2. Besides not being hooked up to a line shaft, what makes the machine not operational? Is it missing parts? Putting an electric motor to run a mini line shaft/jack shaft above it is an easy thing to do. Lots of info on that type of thing on IFI. Show us some detailed photos
  3. Long thread on this exact subject not that long ago, Big can of worms.
  4. can you coat the gear teeth with wax or something so the epoxy wont stick to them? I am worried that removing the dried epoxy would be about the same work as making a new gear. Maybe you make the clamp plates the exact size of the gear so as to be able to wipe the uncured epoxy from the teeth? smith
  5. The thing with V belts is that the belt grips by wedging itself into the pulley. It takes HP to constantly be wedging/un-wedging the belt as the pulley turns. The cog belt looses about no HP this way and the multiV (serpentine) belts do not eat much HP either. This is one reason why cars have moved away from V belts- HP loss = more fuel used.
  6. If you have a 1hp motor then do as mb suggested and use the belt that is called for on your 1hp motor. Why do you want to re engineer something that has been done and proven for many years?? You will also reduce the power to the machine by using those larger belts due to more power needed to spin them. If you really think you want to try to re engineer it at least try to go in a positive direction and either use a cog belt or a multi-V like the serpentine one on cars. Those have much less power loss compared to V belts
  7. This far outweighs any monetary value a collector would put on the old items used here.
  8. That is a nice machine, I think it only has about 40 hrs use on it so it is pretty much new. I have purchased items from him (not through fleabay) and he is a stand up guy.
  9. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia-pacific/2012/03/201232092648174893.html enjoy
  10. Here is a link to a shop tour of their place. Multiple large steam hammers...... Not your weekend warrior shop here. http://www.berkforge.com/tour.html
  11. How much oversize did you drill your hole? The bigger it is the more egg shaped it will be when clamping on a smaller shaft, depends on the relation between shaft and hole.... ;)
  12. Try using a piece of cold roll bar instead of the bolt. I would bet your hole is oversize and bolts are undersize so round bar may take up the slop.
  13. I think the seller realized it is a good thing and got cold feet and is avoiding selling for cheap. Dont hesitate, Good Luck Joshua
  14. You could take this to extreme and to your reenactment in an astronaut looking suit. The bubble helmet would give complete protection from all forms of fliers and the full suit with either fresh air hose or air tank would keep the coal smoke and other particles out of your lungs. Just tell the organizers since there was NO protection back in the day you are trying to show that safety has come a long way .....Might be going a bit far but you could talk in a darth vader type of voice when explaining how the force helps make forge welding possible Then be sure to post photos
  15. Forgemaster, Thank you for bringing this back to life with your new info, I look forward to your video. smith
  16. Jump on it, just be careful not to break your arm getting your money out of your pocket too fast :o . A friend of mine got a small helve hammer that had no motor and needed lots of work for about $750 if I remember correctly. He may also have other stuff you "need" when you pick it up so be sure to have extra cash with you. Good luck :D
  17. http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/NNSRIT2?PMAKA=03203486&PMPXNO=2715348&cm_re=ItemDetail-_-ResultListing-_-SearchResults I vote for these, off of Phils list, look old AND meet ansi standards
  18. You mean your not supposed to cut right on the tile countertop?
  19. This thread reminds me of the scene in The Seven Samurai when the master swordsman has to prove his move was superior to his opponents... to the death.
  20. macbruce, Did you use flat bottom punch or more of a chisel shape to slit and drift in one op to get a nice sideways swelling joint. Or am I missing something? smith
  21. That winning bidder really wants it. He has upped his bid twice above his $810 current bid to stay the winner, look at bid history. Tempting to up his bid a notch but that isnt nice.
