  1. Man-o-man that is sad news. Grant was one of great people who freely shared his knowledge. I was one who would read his posts because you never knew what you were going to learn, even bad jokes from time to time . He was one of the reasons this and other forums were a pleasure to read. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the CBA spring conference in Ferndale a couple years ago. RIP Grant, you are missed here. smith out
  2. What does frost on the line have to do with amount of fuel burned/unburned?
  3. Jan 2 2012 is a federal holiday due to the first being a sunday so a lot of businesses are closed and people returning home from vacations. smith
  4. Finally on the western USA :D
  5. Saw these on fleabay and thought I would ask about them here. Most likely more money than I can spend but it is nice to do some windowshopping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-Small-Pneumatic-Forging-Hammers-/190621791036?pt=Pneumatic_Hydraulic_Valves_Parts&hash=item2c61f1b33c#ht_720wt_1141
  6. Thanks Nuge, Nice to see someone not afraid of doing work on here. I agree 100% about not wanting to hang with the dude who hire riggers to move a workbench. Yesterday I was given a car minus one front wheel assembly. They thought it would take a towtruck and forklift to get off their property. Simple matter of a rolling jack and winch on the trailer. smith out
  7. Why is it common for threads to go bad like this one? I have not been here long, when I signed in it was to learn and it seems like a good place to share info and a lot of good info is shared. But some of these threads that are filled with such negativity that is not even part of the original posts topic make me wonder if IFI stands for: Instigate-Frighten-Intimidate. Cant we all play nice. smith out
  8. I would run a chain and binder around the top of the stand and platen, one sideways to pinch both tops together and one lengthwise one each platen. Do that before trying to load and leave them on until unloaded. Sounds like you will need 6 chains and binders. 3 to hold tops to stand and 3 more to hold it to truck. Clamps will work also, use them as well to prevent any small amount of shifting. Tight chains will damage the corners of the cast iron slightly, protect it with something if it matters. Sounds like you are in good hands. Try to take pics as you go, it should be very simple.
  9. Dan, That sounds great. Make sure either you or he has enough chains and binders to tie it down with, especially if the platens stay on top of the base. Also be sure the platens are connected solidly to the base and each other. Good luck
  10. Dan, I would put the jack under the base and jack the top up with the base, you should put some good clamps on the downhill side to prevent it from sliding down hill until you get the winch on it. That way it is sliding on a smooth surface.
  11. Did you call towruck? What you plan is is exactly what I was trying to tell you a flatbed towtruck would do. Only the truck bed will tilt so you need not jack up the table, and their truck will have a monster winch built in. If that is to much to pay then yes your way will also work. How will you get the frame on the truck without a forklift?
  12. Call towtruck driver and tell them you need to move a workbench, and ask what their hourly rate is. Can you back the flatbed towtruck up to the table and winch it right on the truck off the stand? Ask if you need wood to protect the truckbed- pretend that you care. Then he can dump them where you want and not run up a large amount of time messing around unloading. Good luck
  13. I have several 5x5 platen tables and the weights vary from 3900lbs for the heaviest to 2200lbs for the lightest. these are a lot smaller than yours. I would look into a flatbed towtruck. And yes that is a good deal.
  14. Your right to rant, he should give credit or look forward to karma coming his way.
  15. Wow that looks great. Your posts are one of the main reasons I joined IFI, it is so inspiring to see such good work. smith
  16. I think it ok for him to show work in his portfolio that he did for a previous employer if he gives credit where credit is due. He will need to be generating new work though or else it wont be long before the only thing he can say is look what I did a long time ago... Those pictures are something for him to be proud of being a part of for the rest of his life though. smith out
  17. Time is your friend here. Can you take off the back cap and drop in a bucket to soak?
  18. May I ask what do you mean by lead cap? Is it just a plate of lead "floating" on the sand that fits inside the steel box? How thick? Thank you r smith
  19. Maybe if you ask probation or parole people they dont like your dad and will tell you it is ok. Then your door gets kicked in and him hauled away. Best to get a lawyer to give you the answer. Usually in a situation like this where you have to ask the question it is best to think the answer as -No, bad idea. Would you be asking if you wanted a cute bunny rabbit or a new rain coat?
  20. Thank you Dan for stating the obvious. Shrill histrionics seems to be the norm on this site much more than it used to be.( I was a lurker for a few years) Very discouraging, very.
