  1. lets see if this gets my tail bitten off i dont think anyone has a right to demand the knowledge of someone ells but for myself i can read a book cover to cover and i will not retain nearly as much as being able to watch someone using a skill and ask questions about the applications and pit falls of what they are doing i have been very fortunate to have me many people who enjoy sharing knowledge and in many cases its been a two way street almost everyone has a skill set and many times while someone will not know how to stick weld they can show me a better way to do say carpentry finish work
  2. yeah thats true but at the same time there is no need to reinvent something you are always linking that forklift anvil when people ask about anvils by your logic you should just stay silent and let people subtle along and make up their own idea for a anvil all i am saying is if you know how to do something and someone asks you an intelligent question respond accordingly as to being told to learn how to read/play music the most common way that happens is by finding one of them there music teachers as to the forge welding i do believe that Thomas recommended going and finding a blacksmith to walk someone through how to do it as if i remember correctly he said it can take 6months of trial and error to learn how to forge weld by ones self where a afternoon doing with someone who knows how can significantly speed up the learning curve as well self teaching is all well and good but if you teach yourself how to do something improperly its hard to unlearn it down the road a good mix of self motivation blended with knowing when to ask for help and advice is far better than sticking it out alone and doing yourself harm so as i said if someone comes and ask a intelligent question i try to answer to the best of my ability
  3. well lets put it this way if i ask a intelligent question i hope i deserve a intelligent answer as to playing Beethoven's 9th am i allowed to ask for the music or would that count as cheating in your book ? am i allowed to ask someone how to read music or once again am i supposed to guess as to how it works my thought is this in everything i have done whenever i know more than someone ells or i know of a different way to do something if a person is making an effort to learn and they ask for my opinion or assistance you bet i will give it if someone demands that i show them how to say blow glass out of the blue i will tell them to take a walk .. if on the other hand they have been watching me work and asking for explanations on what i am doing i will see if i can get them to do some simple assistance work with me and teach as i go in closing Knowledge is not a right or privilege it is a Responsibility and a Obligation .. if you horde knowledge it will die with you and that is a sad loss on the other hand if you can find people to pass it on to the world is a better place if you can find it in yourself to take joy or pleaser in the education or of others you have added a new richness to your own life just my 2 cents
  4. so nice hat beth though i would have thought there would be less hair on your chin
  5. well heck now i am hungry and inspired
  6. i like that post vice set up you have there in the background
  7. yeah that was my thought but since i was giving it away i was more just trying to stick in a bit of a double check to if i should have done something different to the antler anyways i ended up giving it several coats of lemon oil to help keep it from drying out so it will sit on a shelf until the next time he is in town and stops by and thanks for the feedback FOG :)
  8. every time i see that link thomas i want to go looking for a forklift tine to make a anvil for doing riveting and the like i could sit and have it tucked between my knees
  9. this topic has been picking at my brain and i finally remembered that there is a product for making glass beads that you use to coat the metal shaft you are forming the bead on this stuff can shrink at the similar rate to the glass and will crumble after use so you can clean it out i am thinking that if you painted a layer on to the inside of your glasses frame and then slumped the glass in when they cool the glass lenses should pop free and you can then use what ever you want to fix them in place http://www.frantzartglass.com/ has a bunch of different kinds for sale and you can get them is as little as 2oz containers on a side note as much as i hate to say it but do you have any kind of a head shop around you that makes (smoking paraphernalia) the glass they use tends to be a lamp working glass so it is much more resistant to heat shock and they might be able to point you to someone that dose custom glass work
  10. i was interested in what these burners look like but i guess he dose not have a websight but there are lots of positive things said about them out there lol
  11. i have to say from long experience i almost never trust what stickers say lol
  12. good stuff and yes i do still measure for many things but if i am just trying something out or say i am working with hot metal and dont have any soapstone handy to mark it with its always nice to know i can get close finding the center of triangles and making the parallelograms i am bad at all the others are a cinch though i still flinch a bit when punching out a hole
  13. I cant keep numbers strait in my head but fortunately i am very good at eyeballing things (drives my father crazy) i think he sleeps with a square and a 300ft tape anyway for years i have played a very simple game on line called you guessed it The Eyeballing Game http://woodgears.ca/eyeball/ the nice thing is it breaks down how you do accuracy wise for parallelograms/midpoint/bisect angle/triangle center/circle center/right angle and convergence dont get me wrong this is not a edge of your seat type of game but it lets me know what i am good at eyeballing and what i really should break out the tools to find the center of its kind of fun and a good time killer plus since we work with hot metal a lot of the time its a handy little tool to get in some practice on without worrying about burnt fingers long story short i finally got around to firing off a letter of thanks for the entertainment to Matthias over at Woodgears and in passing asked if it was ok to toss up a link here for some non woodworkers to come in and play he was quite happy to let us in i hope you guys get some enjoyment out of this
  14. yeah at glass blowing demos i know you are still making product but you have to slow down to narrate and field questions still for me thats when i get to have my fun I am far better at talking when i have things in my hands to talk about
  15. and if nothing ells hold onto the the old screw box for if you ever want to sell it as a complete unit

  17. i am just glad people like them i love them as a time saver i have tarps with a rope laced around the edge and it lets you just toss the tarp over the top of the load and quickly hook it down with the pigtails and then pull the rope tight quick and simple i am feeling a bit embarrassed that i took a photo of the one with sharp edges but the others were all painted the same red as the wagon at the point i thought to take the photo
  18. i think the main thing here is that we were talking about un-powered ways to do this
  19. thats kind of funny i sketched out the same idea but nixed it when you said it had to be opened and closed by hand and my experience with "rise and fall hinges" is when the fall they pick up quite a bit of speed and momentum we had some set up in our squeeze shoot sins the cows could push past them and the gravity would drop them back into place behind after the animal had passed and they really would snap back into place
  20. how about a piston to raise the gate at the hinge before swinging inward that is the only thing i can think of as for a non powder fix to me what he has now is down right brilliant and i am going to try out that idea for gate on a sloped cement slab that always drives me crazy
  21. i suspect this voids the warranty :D but i am going to keep an eye out out recycling for a old microwave to give this a shot with .. outside .. with a long extension cord
  22. Mudbug when you get around to doing this please take a chunk of photos i am looking forward to seeing your setup as i need to at some point flip my fisher over and grind about a half inch off of the base to see if i can level it but so far i have been reluctant to go at it for fear of doing more damage than good but your set up sounds like it would do the trick
