  1. good stuff thanks Jeremy i for the life of me could not remember if they used the long hundred or the short
  2. good luck on that one i have had some luck with the hole its good to see tools used and appreciated and like you say maybe next year
  3. yeah its amazing though now and then you shake a hand and ask some one to keep an eye out but you dont hold your breath and they come through for you its always nice when that happens any thoughts on if this is a bad idea to try and redo the face on this one?
  4. i was on my way to pick up our disc mower and stopped by a local scrapper who i had asked to keep an eye out for anvils before they go into the chipper he was nice enough to drop this one over the bank and 25bucks later and a quick trip down to fish it out and i have something to try and fix or leave it as it is and have a so so anvil for people to learn on that i don't have to worry about over all she aint pretty but still rings like a bell on what face there is 75-80% rebound i wish i could read what is stamped on the side above 1 . 0 . 2 i am assuming this is a simple 102lb in the hundred weight system i am thinking its a mouse hole just going buy the shape of the body and horn anyone have an idea as to the proximate age of this anvil i don't know why but its fun to know how old tools are for me anyways thanks all
  5. well there is this one on line that might give you an idea price wise http://www.ebay.com/itm/Little-Giant-50-Hammer-Great-Condition-/110859993159?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19cfc54047#ht_500wt_1413
  6. i dont know why the photos did not work for you but after a bit of searching i got a look at them over on photobucket all i can say is its worth the trip even if you have to drive there backwards well i hope that helps
  7. ditto for what frosty said and i had no idea about the ss being more ir reflective now i need to go do a few more laps around the scrap yard next week
  8. i still vote to ditch the zip ties the 75 lB rating if for a strait pull you can get them to fail through twisting at a much lower force level plus the nice thing about pipe clamps is you can tighten and loosen them as needed say if you want to slip it off the stand to use it to do some cutting as a hand tool other than that A+ on the macgyver build
  9. FFF on the small quench tank i really like the stainless steel soda kegs you can cut the top off roll the edge and you have a nice deep quench tank that is about 9 inches across so its out of the way but still about 2ft deep so its nice for just touching the tips of hooks or a quick dip for a punch or the like
  10. it really makes me curious as to what ells ebay is hiding from me i just looked once more and the soonest ending one i see is 29hours lol yeah that whole "vise" part did the trick
  11. i took a look for it on ebay and could not find it in search under post vice or blacksmith vice or leg vice
  12. yeah i thought the same thing that line right down the middle of the face made me think the same thing when i saw that one on line
  13. very nice MO that is a set up that makes me drool
  14. hey Thomas he might have been a really good smith <- :-P In my op you are not going for period correct as much as in the spirit of and or not looking jarringly out of place but as always use what meets with your own safety standards and don't compromise on that other than that dress them up anyway you want the ones i am using now are a modern black framed set that i have on in my profile photo i like them and trust them and they are not that disruptive to the spirit of events as having a pair of wrap around set of clear plastic glasses would be and all you have to say is sorry but safety first is anyone gives you a hard time over all i think some people are getting hung up on what they would have warn at the time and need to take a step back and see this more as trying to play along with letting people have more of a feel for the time while not compromising there own safety
  15. i use the colored zip ties for any hydraulic connections/hoses to make sure i always hook them back up properly and to keep track of cords i do like the electrical tape idea a bit quicker to set up
  16. the other option is to see if there are any museums that want them i know a few years back the maritime museum in Vermont had a crate full of them they were "fixing" that some guy found hidden in his pond
  17. get a definitive wieght on it before buying some people are good at estimating these things others are terrible and there could be upwards of a 75lb swing i have found that i can lift and move a 200lb anvil as easily as i can pick up a 100lb sack of grain so it can be ez to under estimate as well as over but the tendency is to over estimate
  18. it is size related the image has to be under 120kb i have my fingers crossed they will up the size once more
  19. kwp if you are using hard firebrick it will take much more to heat it as they don't insulate the way soft fire brick dose the soft ones you can cut with a drywall knife and carve with a spoon
  20. the magnets i have used i pulled out of old computer hard drives and when you put them somewhere they stay there as stated above they work better once they get a nice fuz on them the HD magnets are free to get i just stop by recycling any time i need them and pull a few hardrives from the electronics bin and take the magnets from inside and toss the wrest back into the bin they are rair earth magnets and while kind of brittle very strong i also tend to use them in the bottom of oil filters to help trap any iron filings that get into the oil
  21. my bet is that as this item was up on ebay almost a month ago and the original poster has not responded to any comments here they did not buy it just a guess though
  22. when you upgrade to a better anvil if nothing ells it would make a nice hot cutting and punching table while you were learning and would keep your anvil face safe
  23. yeah its on my list of things to do the first one i made was out of half inch plate and it was just way to bouncy i keep diving into the scrap dumpster at recycling and i have my fingers crossed over a lucky dip
  24. yeah thats about what mine looks like and my problem is i cant get as extreme an angle as i need i am trying to set up something so i can work over on the edge of my anvil so far everything i have tried has not really had the stability i am looking for
