  2. i have the AIA(best christmass gift of the year) book i had not realised that the round hole in the under side of the bace of the anvil was a handiling hole as well
  3. huh mine has the same hole in the bottom i had wondered if it was original to the anvil
  4. good idea steve i really had not thought of doing that some times the simple solutions are the best thanks
  5. yeah i was afrade of that i have a father that would really like a rr knife but i might have to cheat and see about forging a spike out of some spring steel and then forging it down into a knife i have no idea why he is stuck on the idea but when a man makes a request for his 65th birthday you got to at least give it a shot (spellcheck is just not working for me right now so sorry if this makes your eyes bleed)
  6. hi i recently had some one that i had made some railings for come by and drop off about 100 rr spikes that his son picked up while doing some work for the railroad they thought of me and dropped them off as a thankyou long story short dose anyone know of a listing of what the different markings on the heads of the spikes mean some of these have a H, hc or a few 2 and three lines across the tip of the head i did a bit of a search on the the good old google and here on ifi and i had no luck coming up with a list of whats what and i could have sworn i had seen mention of one on here anyways thanks for all those hunks of knowledge you will but hurling this way
  7. thats kind of depressing its like going to auctions for tools and the like and realizing there are 10 dealers from out of state but thats happening more and more up here as well this is primarily farm equipment but still this was at the quad state comment
  8. lol yeah i realise that i was thinking more just that it gives a bit of a idea of it in for lack of a better word in action i am searusly lusting after that swivil action but then i am quick to lust after old tools
  9. just came across one of these for sale on ebay and they show a bit of how its mounted i hope it helps http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-BLACKSMITHS-MACHINSTS-MECHANICS-COLE-BENCH-VISE-Anvil-lot-400-/110811244906?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19ccdd696a
  10. toss of a photo if you can that is not much to go on otherwise can you add any info as to markings on it sutch as holes clamp lines/grooves and the like
  11. all i can say is try a difrent shop in the end it comes down to persinal taste and they might not have liked them and as a result did not want to carry them
  12. i guess in that case i would say add electrical and fuel fees into your costs bc at some point they will be part of your expenses put that portion aside and have it to use to pay for equipment upgrades or to help pay the electric as well dont forget to add in the costs of new/replacement tools and equipment even if it is only on paper but down a list of your equipment what you would like to upgrade and what needs to be replaces estimate costs and try to work those into what your hourly shop expenses are it is always very easy to sell your self short but this should help you come up with what a hour or your time is worth i bet others out there do this differently but i tend to need this sort of reminder good luck with the meeting and i think the idea of having multiple finishes to show is a plus
  13. as to the price i think it is depending on where you live that could be a $240 candle holder my town has a main street and thats about it but if i drive 45min west i get to a resort town and if i am in the mood i can drive down to stow vt and find out what the crazy people spend on stuff it is astounding at how much the price can vary by location i know i have a sliding scale on pricing partly after having the enlightening experience of having someone pay me half again as much as i had asked for a vase bc in their opinion it was worth more and paying more for it it some how made it better a side thought is what are your expenses like for this that is time+materials+ tools ? i know with glass blowing at one point my expenses were running around $120 a hour but a good chunk of that was from the power that was needed still it made me re asses what i was making per hour i don't know if that was the most enlightening chunk of a reply or not but i hope it helps as to the wax finish it seems a bit green(or is that just from the light in the photo) to me have you tried buffing it? my favorite finish is bees wax put on to hot metal and buffed when its cooled
  14. that is one nice looking anvil and a nice looking stand thanks for the photos i need a bit more mobility in the anvil i have some lockable wheels from a set of scaffolding i am thinking about making a three point stand with those at the base as well i am hoping down the line to upgrade to a 250+ anvil so i intend to over build a bit when i make this stand lol
  15. I by necessity have to have a modular mobile forge set up just bc now and then we bring the odd mower or kicker wagon or tractor into the shop and you have to clear the decks to get the floor space as a result most of my tools are on wheels of one sort or another or are at least movable with a dolly so long story short i am looking for suggestions for the best of both worlds here dose anyone out there have what they think is a good workable anvil stand for a 150lb or so anvil i have finished up or am finishing up most the the ongoing projects and look to have a few days of bad weather and free time coming up well thanks for you time all wyatt
  16. i truly wished i had done a better job of documenting my work while i was doing glassblowing but many times i would be shot at the end of the night and i took photos of stuff sitting on work benches and the like and packed them up and off they went no matter how good the pieces were the tended to look like junk in my portfolio so i have tried to get on my own case about getting good clean photos of now now to show people when they are asking about a project or to see examples of past work anyways its nice when the quality of the work is shown to its best in a photo like those you took heading over to take a look at your blog now
  17. i wish there was just a like button on here some where lol anyways its nice to have that side shot that is just one good looking center piece there
  18. i like the vinegar finish as well but i have had people ask to have items that have had highlights polished into them with the scale left on it dose give a more antiqued feel and its hard to get any way other than a lot of hand sanding but in the end you cant beat how it looks having the bright clean metal juxtaposed with the polished satin of the scale that has had beeswax melted into it
  19. if you can get him down to 150 or so then thats not to bad the hone looks good if nothing ells it would not be a bad second anvil at that size just my $0.02
  20. cbmikeray um you realize he is asking for a id and from the post it looks like its his and he did not state a price anyways to me the horn is is good shape and while it is hard used it dose not look to have been abused any chance of a shot of the other side and the under side of the anvil all in all i hope you get some real enjoyment out of it
  21. http://www.camandcheese.com/index.php/do-it-yourself/56-do-it-yourself/88-cardboard-light-box this is a very quick and ez way to do a light box i have set up for when i have had to send out photos of glass work or pottery for the most part but it works just as well with larger items i helped a friend to one of these out of a box from a full sized fridge and it work quite well and was collapsible very handy to have around and cheap enough to make to burn after if you dont have the space to keep it
  22. just imagine the fish you might catch with a lure that size
  23. man this thread you have going here has been a treat to check in on at the end of the day thanks for the good documentation and a solid chunk of entertainment
  24. i have to say i had been thinking that a way around the steam jacket and need for moving water would be to move your anvil you could hook a cable or chain to the anvil and swing it back and forth in a large pool/pond or if you are lucky off a dock this would require a boom of some sort but in general seems not to complicated as well there should be a good chunk of entertainment value in the anvil swing
