  1. well i got a treat yesterday my brother dropped by for a visit and cam out to see what i was doing in the shop and i got him set up on my fisher while i was on my HB and walked him through punching and drifting a the basics of making his own rr spike bottle opener (this was his first time on a anvil and it flat out made my day) it was so much easer to walk him through making it with out having to swap spots at the anvil and in the end it was not the pettiest thing ever made on a anvil but it works like a charm and he was happy as can been and i am hoping to get him back in the shop a few more times (think mini striker) he is about half of me but he is scrappy
  2. very true Baja and its good to know of someone that has one and likes it that means i am one step closer to diving down to take a look at it but until i can get some real idea as to the shape its in i am holding off i have yet to get a photo of it i have picked up a good bit of info here from all of you so far i did get a note saying it was a 150lb but the last 150 anvil i got turned out to be a 118 not bad but i keep hoping i can find a 200-250 or so anvil down the road but you work with what you have and keep and ear out and your eyes open and you never know what you will find
  3. i am in the same boat here 13eeee or 14eee depending on the boots as well dew to a 120foot long home made slip in slide made back in high school i busted my big toe so its a bit of a renegade now (so i tend to have to stretch my left boot a bit for a good fit) for the most part i have just been using regular work boots and cussing when a cow steps on my foot and keeping my fingers crossed about large hard and heavy items not pinching my piggies so dont mind me i will be lurking on this thread
  4. very cool Phil i know she still has lots of stuff she has not gotten around to photographing yet
  5. yeah i wish she had more photos on line the makes all kinds of animals as well as jewelry i know somewhere she has a chainmail bikini top <- very distracting
  6. I have a friend that dose things with chain-mail i would have thought impossible (this might just be that she is fanomanaly pacient) but besides from that i just thought people here would get a bit of a kick out of her sculptural chain-mail http://kateevans68.wordpress.com/2012/03/16/the-downside-of-chainmaille/
  7. my thought has always been that a pair of metal framed glasses with the wire cage on the side with modern lenses in them are quite safe and while not period are less disruptive to the over all feel of a event i guess i would say more in the spirit the time but then this might also have to do with with the fact that i like this style of safety glasses but it all comes down to what you feel safe using, you have to have confidence in your equipment
  8. yup that is the plan they are working getting their daughter to come over and take a photo
  9. dose anyone know anything about the Hill anvils? anvils in America has about one paragraph about them and thats its this anvil is about 140miles away from me so i am hoping to flesh out my knowledge of a smidgen before taking a drive over to look at it primarily i am thinking about build quality and rough idea of weight all the info i have on it at the moment is It is roughly 22 inches long. 10 inches tall and 4 ½ inches wide and made by hill thanks all
  10. for spell check just right click in the "Reply to this topic" text window and you can select check spelling in the in the drop down menu that shows up
  11. used a pare similar to these when doing historical glass blowing http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-SAFETY-GOGGLES-CASE-TAWA-CO-/320864786740?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab5081934 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-WILSON-safety-glasses-STEAMPUNK-/260976693674?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cc36c51aa they are not perfect but having the metal mesh on the sides greatly improves the protection there are similar ones with leather side guards on the side but they are sort of dark i was surprised at to how comfortable they were and i still use a similar more modern version when working in the shop today
  12. this thread has some very good ones in it and could be worth a look as far as inspiration goes
  13. well macbruce do you take the time to spray your rusty stuff with wd40 before you do a photo shoot? if not you are missing out on getting all the crazy people on ebay all lustful for your treasure
  14. the best rebound is in this zone this is your you have a solid column of steel unlike out in the heal where there is less mass under the face of the anvil
  15. unless i am mistaken that 98 marked on it below the usa would indicate that this is a 98lb anvil other than that way to bring that anvil back to life
  16. the anvil i just linked got was far rustier than yours and in about 45min of wire brushing with a stiff wire cup fro a 4 1/2 inch grinder , q wipe down with some dry gas(i have a crate of them kicking around and it drys almost instantly and will not be a problem for the oil coat) and a rag to clean all the dust off and finally a coat of boiled linseed oil you are good to go
  17. i only wish i had taken a before photo there was up to half a inch of rust dirt and paint on it
  18. today i came home with a 130-150lb Hay Budden (thanks for the id) and 15 nippers/tongs for 75bucks and a bit of shifting and lifting to get to them and then to move things around for the person selling them my thought is to reforge a few of the nippers into tongs after i check around to see if i can find any farriers interested in trading for any of them
  19. i am looking forward to having 2 anvils so i can set one up with tooling on it and save some time on swapping things out as i work as well the horn is kind of intriguing shape wise very different from the blacksmith anvils i have used as well now i am trying to nerve myself into cutting my fisher out of its stand and seeing about milling the bottom flat
  20. this is just a nice well put together video i know that there are many people out there like me who just need to see how something is put together to really have a good grip on how something is made this is a fantastic teaching video thanks for taking the time to put this together
  21. yup its there i admit i just got sick of resizing photos so that the sight would let me upload them after i get a bite to eat i am going to go out and see if i can fight a weight on it or if it will have to wait till my next checkup and i will sneak it in onto one of the scales in the examining rooms lol
  22. i have a similar torch and i am wondering if could be used as the guts so to speak of a forced air style burner
  23. fantastic that was my hope but i did not want to bias peoples opinions now i am thinking i need to get my butt in gear and get a stand fabricated for it the best part is i just got a call from a local museum that is putting on a hammer in this coming Saturday and they are in need of more anvils and tools for the event so now i am set i have a 2 anvils and a old mutt(cast steel 40lb or so but a dog of a anvil to start with that is perfect for those still in a hit or miss stage of smithing)
  24. well today i finally after much phone tag met up with a man who had a anvil for sale that had been living in garage behind a water heater for a unknown amount of time Some time spent removing quite a bit of dirt and rust and i am still stumped as to who made it most of the makers mark on the side has rusted off or was never stuck very deep it dose have a 2 2 under the horn to with a 2 to each side of the handling hole there as well the serial number looks to be 134665 it dose appear to have a weld line between the base and the body of the anvil besides from the fact that it is a farrier pattern anvil i am very happy with it only a sight dish in the face and over all its in good shape and the rebound makes my fisher seem like its asleep well i have my fingers crossed as to a name and age thanks all for taking a look
  25. i think all the blue prints are still here http://www.iforgeiron.com/page/index.html/_/blueprints/?view=archive
