  1. You have overcome the biggest obstacle. You got out there, found some tools, made a fire and beat the snot outta some metal. You found it was fun. The next step is to aquire some knowledge. You come to the right place for that :-) You can't imagine how many come here, ask a million questions and haven't even yet found a hammer or tongs or a fire. Some guys just want to want to. Good on you and yer bro. Now get another fire built and beat on some more metal :-) bruce
  2. Pete, is that a convection oven? They work much better than a toaster oven, more even heat.
  3. The last couple I did, put the cut in with a 1/8"chop saw blade thenj went back and widened it with the 4" angle grinder anda 1/4" thick wheel. It opens it up a bit more than a 1/4". Adding that L6 would make contrast for sure.
  4. I've had some success doing ladder patterns in cable. Just use a thicker grinding wheel to do the grooves.
  5. Here's my last defunct water heater. Great for welding/heat treating due to the size.
  6. Good description of the process Karl. I've been in the autobody bidness for prit near 40 yrs and 3M has been at the top of the heap for me during all those yrs.
  7. Stopped at an estate sale this morning and found this lil set of forged tweezers. Looks to be forged from a piece of 1/8" carbon steel and still has hammer and file marks.
  8. Lew, if you know anyone who works for McKinney or any of the large drilling companies, investigate getting a piece of kelly bar. They are 4140 and a 100# piece makes for a great anvil. I use mine for straightening blades. bruce

  14. What are you fellas using to lubricate your hammers? I was filling my chainsaw this morning with bar oil and in 32 degree weather it was as slow as the proverbial molasses. Any thoughts on bar oil as a hammer lube?
  15. I prefer cloth belts for my Fairbanks, dang leather stretched too much.
  16. I also think verticals are the best for welding. Nice job there, John! I'm in the process of building another vertical with a pipe vise attached so I can weld cable without removing from the fire.
