  1. It may be a good idea to learn a few basic blacksmith procwedures before jumping into forging a blade.
  2. Looks fine to me John!. I rather like the low layer twists.
  3. I think that style handle would look good done in cable (BOG) A week with howard!! You're gonna learn a lot!! I seen him demo at harley's several yrs ago and it was a great experience. He's a great teacher. BTW get some of that 1086 modified from him. great steel!
  4. John, is that the one you posted before? or a new one?? Either way , I like that style! Keep 'em coming! :-)
  5. O1 needs 10-15 minutes soak timeat critical temperature to realize full hardness.
  6. W1 and W2 are , iirc, are both cleaner forms of 1095.
  7. yes, it's thick enough. No, the fire will take care of the rust
  8. Thomas, Kovels is no longer. Mick and his wife have both passed and the boy sold out to Jantz.
  9. I think SS cable will prove quite frustrating. Keep in mind guys, wire damascus is prolly the hardest to make correctly. I don't chemically clean mine, several red heats and bang on the anvil cleans things out well.
  10. I have a set of dies for an A. I'll get the measurements and we'll see how they match up. They may be too small for yer E
  11. BTW, there is an ongoing Fairbanks rebuild thread right now at Bladeforums in the knifemaker section.
  12. If your belt is too tight, the hammer will cycle when you put power to the motor. Check treadle adjustment and damper/brake adjustment for free play. I couldn't make leather work on my A, had to go to composite material and now have single hit capabilities. Also, is yer damper on the down sid eof the belt, in other words, is the on the sid egoing to the drive wheel?
  13. Can't identify the anvil but I have one that came from Ft Riley and it is a Vulcan. Also, I passed one up several yrs ago that came from a Navy ship and it too was a Vulcan. Mebbe the guvmint bought their anvils from them ??
  14. I get quite a bit of contrast using different bandsaw blades, sometimes 4-5 different types, wood/steel , etc.
  15. Yep! Angle creates a vortex that makes for a more even heat.
  16. I have several and have used it to drill antler for knife handles. Lots safer than the electric powered ones :-)
  17. Good! I been getting a kick outta this "scrapmascus" name. Thanks for bringing it up jock!
  18. Cliff, try Darren Ellis. I believe he sell by the foot. If you have no luck there, contact me offlist. bruce
