  2. just got the mail today, in it was the Hammers Blow from ABANA. On page 5 under shop tips...Cushioned Hammer Handles by James DeMartis he is using "Tennis Racquet's Grip" he says it improves the handle by reducing shock,asorbing sweat from your hands and improving grip.he also says the tape last a long time...might give it a try see if it helps you out!
  3. try some Blue Emu oil on your hands before and after you work...your friend(?) Aurthur I'm sure would rather you didn't!
  4. use olive oil and if you bake it do it outside using a gas grill as it will smoke it will turn the finish dark
  5. I have ...I used a hammer with a broken claw . I cut the other claw off and hammered the pole end to make a bowl adz. the brick mason hammer I found at a flea market the blade was broken ...I just had to sharpen it to use it holds a good edge...have you looked a Alexander Weygers books"The Modern Blacksmith", The Making of Tools" and the Recycling of Tools" i think there all in one book now. anyway a lot of good iformation

  7. thanks guys, Frosy thats a good ideal to call in; might be fun. for the last 30 years or so I've worked every holiday and every other weekend. being off seems like it might be fun for a change...

  13. for your marking tool look in george Dixion book he shows one there for the other I think your saying something to fit into the hardy hole to position the work and also hold a punch of some sort if that is correct I saw something on the Flordia guild web site.
  14. have you tried the junk shops and antique stores in your area...even old time hardware stores your never know what might be stuck in a corner in the back just outa site!
  15. Dick that looks like a real nice block ...from what I can see of you anvil edge it doesn't look too bad
  16. sharp edges also create stress points in your forged work. as Glenn says the block is the best option...can you post a picture of your anvil?
  17. thats the way they are supposed to be dressed,with the radius . it sounds like you got a really good anvil ready to go...don't do any grinding
  18. come to one of the guild meeting here in georgia...either Alex bealer or Ocmulgee blacksmith guild I'm sure someone will have a Hofi or a Hofi type you can compare to other types
  19. did a google search for the complete blacksmith it comes up as being printed in England by Apple the cover appears to be the same as the "the backyard blacksmith". i didn't check the print date ....hope this helps!
  20. I took Hofi's lead and got some mineral oil at wally world around a dollar a bottle. a lot cheaper than motor oil. a little goes a long way ...
  21. I have one of these also it says it will bend 3/8x 2" the only problem is the flats at each end ...I weld it together then finish the curve on the anvil ...works for me

    I like that ...you got a nice shelf to set stuff ...put a big magnet on the pipe to hold your hot rasp so you just have extend your hand to grab it

I'v go a 140 lb-er like you the hardy is a bit big ..I just made a hot hardy to fit it along with a side table like hofi has on his anvil stands I did inlarge the prickeral hole to 1/2" so I could use my other hold downs...the bottom is not ground square on the face of mine a few holes have come through ...the more I hammer in the middle. its one heck of and improvement from the one I started with from Tiwan
