  1. To bad, it's to bad its so far for me to drive...or it would be in the back of my truck already .....how did you get a pic of it ?....that close and its not yours ?
  2. nice work Lans...I think that's what Glenn posted...I was going to try that myself, now that I see it I'm for sure going to do it
  3. I like "how to write your name in steel "....be careful with that one
  4. Well....since no one answered so far....in the book... " Twentieth century Toolsmith and Steelworker" it states " take 1 pound of ashes from white ash bark, dissolve in water. heat your iron red and cool in this solution, and your iron will turn white as silver" I don't know, I was going to try it...never got around to it, maybe I'll talk to my tree guy friend, get some bark and give it a go. I don't know if the term "iron" will translate well to steel.....now.... once again I'm curious, I gotta try it...will let you know, after the holiday, taking a few days off..... Remember the Veterans in your area,...thank at least one
  5. one thing about aluminum is........ you need a lot of heat....if it is "CLEAN"...and hot..use a 3/32 rod, and PUSH it into the weld area....( means---, feel the rod bucking back at you, while pushing into the puddle ). If you force it....it works......try a tack with that method,..... and see if it works for you.....it should.
  6. you can bolt angles to the floor abutting the frame of the hammer, (like a picture frame)....works like a charm, with smaller anchors
  7. I agree with Big foot, and water is xx xxxx for springs...they usually fracture if you xx xx in xxxxx.
  8. got a bobcat with a s32s wire feeder if I need it.......comes in handy for the big stuff, (front end loaders, backhoes, blades etc ) to cut the time in half. And an old hobart 150....still a good machine
  9. I am in awe of the depth perception of the handle...it must take a measure of persistence to achieve such a pleasing visual effect
  10. Well I'll tell you what i xxxxxxx think, its all xxxxxxxx, especially at this xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx , when I was a xxxxxxx helper, it was xxxx, every time I xxxxxxxx went to the xxxxxxx, forge, the master told me to go to the xxxxxxx and go xxxx a xxxx on my xxxxxxx. at the time it didn't seem so xxxxxxx funny. But now that i'm older and wiser I think both of them were bigger xxxxxxxx than I ever knew ! If any of you newbies get the xxxxxxx chance learn from a xxxxxxx master, do it, because many smiths are xxxxxxxxx, but there are a select few who are the xxxx, you have to do your xxxxxxx research to separate the two. If you xxxxxxx ever think that an xxxxxxx can't show you something, you need to step back and re-evaluate your situation. there has been many times my own xxxxxxxxxxx has gotten in the way of a unique learning experience. Now I xxxxxxx know my xxxx, and I still am on the lookout for new ideas and they aren't here any xxxxxxx more to "help " me. ( moderator...feel free to edit this post as you see fit )
  11. try changing the tip, also if its a two piece torch the 0x valve must be open all the way before opening the "cut" valve....2-1 or 3-1 on the pressures
  12. I actually am at a disadvantage when it comes to slang terms or real terms for that matter, most of the smiths I've worked with didn't speak that fluent English
  13. I'll tell you what .....Those tongs beat my first pair by a mile. congrats
  14. there are a lot of terms that are not "allowed " on IFI........ go figure.
  15. Thanks Bob, perhaps one day we will smash some iron together,....a few faces...maybe some hands
  16. Get a job, It will give you experience....buy some equipment...then you will have something
  17. A good fight,.... sometimes brings friends you didn't you could have. You may have a new friend, even if the two of you don't know it yet........... But, he may be a complete xxxxxxx, in which case....Forget him
  18. Here is one made by J.M.Walker, an excellent smith from Md.
  19. off the top of my head 8"x22" x 1/4 is around 15 pounds ( 11 1/4 pounds per sq ft ), maybe 3/16 would be more manageable
  20. Well...if you can make a dragon head on the end of a spike and draw out the tail for a thumb rest , I would say you are already on your way ! you in the music biz ?
  21. Not the same one, but I showed him how to do it today. Maybe next month I'll show him how to open the eyes but yeah I'm the same guy from utube

  23. TRIP: I think it was 4" x 6 1/2 Dave: thanks, I worked for years without anvil tools except a cut off hardy, I was forced to learn my "way around an anvil" you can even use the hardy hole in lieu of the ring ( well , my hardy hole is 1 1/4 )
  24. If you use a tax # to buy , you must charge sales tax when you sell. At one time I didn't file my quarterly return because I had no sales......( forty years ago ) I received a bill for $2000 from the tax man, I dropped that number right away !!
