  1. Hi everyone! I'm Jack and I'm from Berks County, PA. I'm actually not a smith yet, but I'm going to be starting my apprenticeship with our blacksmiths at the Daniel Boone Homestead, as a volunteer living historian. (Translation: I'm going to be learning 18th century Blacksmithing!) I'll be starting during our Heritage Day event on the 29th and I'm really looking forward to it. My hope is that I take too it well and that I'll be able to not only forge things that we need for the Homestead but also stuff that we can sell in the gift shop of the Homestead to bring in some more financial support to our local historic site. A little bit about me, I'm 24, and have wanted to learn smithing for a very long time. My dad actually apprenticed to a blacksmith (alas not a historic one) back in his day and I've been wanting to give it a go ever since. I have a hobby farm at my house, along with a bunch of pets, so you'll always be hearing me talk about all my animals and how much of a zoo the house is! I'm hoping to build a forge at home so I can work whenever, not just at the Homestead. Any advice is greatly appreciated, and I'd be happy to sit and listen till my ears fall off!
  2. Well before i start making a fool of myself....thought it would be prudent to to introduce myself............(if you want more info' go to my profile) The name is Ditchman...which i have used for many years on shooting forums...i joined this forum as i need your brains to push me along my way to making a decent set of hunting knives...........i am used to "pushing metal about".......i have made a hunting knife before ...just the was out of a Toyota leaf spring...and as i was in southern sudan at the time and ivory was still had an ivory and brass handle........the end product was a good servicable blade...that had a handforged look to it i flatterened it with a planishing hammer before hollow grinding it....i gave it to a friend who was "made up " with it....and to my knowledge he still wears it every day... I have promised to make a set of hunting knives for a friend...but i need to up my skill set...hence joined this forum...where i can pick you's folks brains.. the weather here is xxxxxx is cold not spending a lot of time in the shed at the moment...but inside sitting in front of the fire..... as ever............ Ditchman
  3. Hello, I'm to this site and pretty new to forging. My son and I built a coal forge that worked pretty well, but it was small so we dumped it for a propane forge we made out of an old 20 LP tank. We had one burner on it and it didn't get quite hot enough to weld. So we just put on a second burner. I'm not sure it will weld either. I hope I can learn from you guys. I have experience in other ways that might make me an asset too. Good to meet you all. Adam
  4. Hi! Thought I should say an offical greeting here to! As a newbie to the blacksmithing world this is a pretty cool forum. Just a little about me and blacksmithing perhaps...? So "nessesity is the mother of invention" I hear and well, though I don't get to have that notoriety of inventing the art, I started into this with the need for hooks to fit the coat rack that I made for my wife several months ago. "If I can't find a hook I like then dangit I'm gonna make one" was pretty much how it went. With a brieft and distant memory from metals shop in high school and the good ol' places such as you tube and anvilfire, here I am now drooling over the next project and other peoples anvils! I'm sure if your reading this I will be asking you a thousand questions that have already been asked as well as the other thousand that I forgot I already asked. Thanks and see ya around! Nate
