  1. So I've already made a post about using spring steel for a makeshift anvil and welding spring steel. I got a lot of support and help! But I was wondering about heat treating spring steel. So I've heard from a couple different knife makers that spring steel is a pretty good material to make knives out of, but spring steel is already hardened (at least the spring steel I have). So I have a couple of questions: - If your making a knife out of spring steel that is hard enough to dull a drill bit but soft enough to have a file just barely dig into it, does it need to be hardened further?
  2. Hey everyone, i have some leaf springs that i picked up that i want to practice on. I know a place where i can get unused ones too so there are no fractures. I have a charcoal forge and am building a propane one soon. I am very beginner and i have made one small pipe wrench knife so far. What tips do y'all have for forging leaf springs? I also plan to pick up some more reliable tool steels like 01 for practice. Also one more question, does burning high alloy chromium steel have create deadly chromates? I know chrome coatings are deadly for that reason
  3. I am looking to make a new spring for a leg vice out of a automotive leaf spring. If I re shape it in the forge will i need any special cooling treatment to retain its springiness?
  4. Hello all, First i would like to say its been well relativly forever since i have posted or commented anything on here but im trying to get alittle better about that. So my main reason for posting this is to talk about a knife i plan to make for my mother as part of her christmas present. It will be made out of leaf spring and hopefully will have a bone handle with a full tang. I would of course appriciate any tips or tricks anyone has picked up on working with both materials. I will of course be posting pictures as soon as i am able. I have already roughed out the tang and plan to start for
