    I started at 14 but did not have a clue as to what I was doing. I then stated paying a little closer attention to the girls and forgot about blacksmithing. I started back seriously about it at 25.

    As son of bluegrass says a few more details would help with answers. I also use trans fluid on unknown steels.

    I am with others. Go with coal. You can get a lot more finished products out of 50# of coal than you can 50# of charcoal.

    Its really hard to figure because the cost of the coal or gas,power,grind disc,wear and tear on tools,etc. I would have to agree with Finnr. At least twice the cost of material. $20 an hour being a rough figure. Keep in mind if you go to their house to take measurements and design something for their specfic needs that would be extra.

    I get mine from the trash pick up people. The trucks that haul the large dumpsters have cables that they have to replace often. 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 sizes

    Like the others said best to make those shanks fit if you plan on keeping the anvil. The ones that you can get to hammer you couldheat and beat them down a bit

    I use borax mainly because I usually weld carbon steel and like it better for that purpose. When I do just weld mild I use ez weld and really like the results it gives but there again I have used borax numerous times on mild. It is probably a matter of opinion and what your use to.

    He used the sheet plastic just for a model. After he got it like he wanted it he drew plans . The plastic was just a mock up of what it will look like when makes it out of steel.
