  1. I can use an 8 pounder, so long as I can wring it's neck and lever the elbow end under my butt :D
  2. Michael, you have a chain attached around the billet to the shackle of your hoist, where would one find an attachment like this or did you just rig up an idler sprocket and chain yourself?
  3. The feet, legs, ears, mouth and eyes, you have even got that vacant look that sheep have.
  4. Well the time and care taken in the design and assembly shows in the finished article, lovely shape and well made, Chapeau !!
  5. Slightly off topic, I went to look at an anvil today 280 lbs with an 1" 5/8th hardy hole, biggest I've seen, lands either side were about 2" wide. It made the tail look a bit fragile. Decent enough anvil, but I do not fancy having to re-make my hardy tools.
  6. Alec, Nothing left for me to add, everyone has said it all. That was a steep learning curve. Working with the public can be very tiring but when it goes right very rewarding too. Your positive attitude and enthusiasm along with your excellent work will always be successful, so long as you keep on enjoying it. The questions are tiring but having no one to ask the questions is demoralising. Keep on smiling and that will never happen to you. Well done Alec !!!!
  7. For Fleurette I would read "Rosette". If there are 3 separate sections your biggest problem is going to be locking them all together in an aesthetic way and maintaining stabilty and rigidity, as three stone slabs at different heights with gaps between will not look too good. I am sure you will find a solution, good luck.
  8. Vinegar is also good for wasp and bee stings. I also put a little in the water when I am poaching an egg, it stops it seperating. My dad always said it thins the blood, so everytime I eat some pickles i have a mouthful.
  9. Is it OK to sit in? Or is it an instrument of torture? Anyway remember, it is the journey, not the arrival. You have already learnt what to do for the next one, and what not to do.This is the chair that YOU made, your FIRST.Do Not Undervalue it.
  10. Looks like a drain cover to me.
  11. I was wondering where my teenage boy had got to, tell him his daddy says HI !! only joking.....

    Iron Worker

I bought a 40 ton Kingsland hydraulic new 14 years ago, it is hugely underused, I work it for about 5/6 hours every 3/4 months, but in that time I can crop and punch enough components that used to take days/weeks to make. I would not be without it,I only use my drill and bandsaw now for tube and box section.
  13. I too was born in '50,Have we met? because you know a lot about my current state of health especially the vigour bit.
  14. Mark a line on the workpiece that corresponds to the other side of the anvil that you will be bending on when your bend line is lined up on the edge of the anvil, always more than one way to skin a cat :)
  15. Was that 300 lbs of butcher meat or did you get it to stand on the bathroom scales? :)
  16. All these tales remind me of the saying, "Employ a teenager NOW,while they still know it ALL"
  17. No one has mentioned that the "HOOD" went down with a lot of civilian workers on board still trying to equip it out, it still wasn't finished ! As a boy I knew a few women who were widowed when it went down.
  18. Are tapered V-blocks used for drawing hex??
  19. Very good, you must be pleased how that turned out, making a successful tool is very rewarding, keep on experimenting.
  20. You are a brave man welding with all that hay around. I had a shop fire about 20 years ago when a welding spark set fire to some wood. I have been paranoid ever since.
  21. The other man's grass is always greener,or you always want what you don't have. My TIG is an old one with a shunt transformer and no foot control. It does me fine.I always want more control coming to the end of a weld on ali,a bit hard with a simple on/off, but, I don't do enough to warrant buying a new one.
  22. Depends what your final application is, torque requirement etc, pulleys the simplest, reduction gearbox probably the best,I always thought a VFD would only work as a speed reducer on a 3 phase motor???
  23. Sigh, I wish I had deep pockets and a big shop. https://www.apexauctions.com/auction-us/auctionDetails.htm?auctionId=468
  24. Sounds good, but the more you drop the frequency the less torque you get as well as less RPM.
  25. If the glass table top is nice and heavy with dressed edges, then I just cut out little rubber plugs and insert them into drilled holes with the plugs standing proud and sit the glass on top, leave a bit of a safety margin round the edge. To cut out the plugs just get a piece of small bore tube or pipe and chamfer the edges sharp, bang it on a piece of rubber sheet and there are your plugs.
