I love books.  I grew up in a bookshop...  My grandfather and his brother, my father and his brother... I started swinging hammers...

You cannot be too rich, too thin, or have too many books.

A very wise person once told me when starting any new endeavor your first investment should be $1000 in books.

On my way to take my son to a doctor’s appointment, I noticed some scrap beside the road. Having dropped him off, I circled back around to pick it up.

If you’re going to collect blacksmith’s roadkill, ya gotta be dedicated!

I have been considering getting a truck mounted hoist for awhile. So far haven't pulled the trigger on it, but I can no longer lift things like I used too.

A couple of snatch blocks with pulleys and some rope aren't bad things to keep floating around in the back of the truck behind the seat either. That or a flip flop winch can get you out of a lot of trouble.

Also known as a come-along, for obvious reasons.

I've recently discovered that I need something to straighten twists, so I got me a rawhide mallet

What ThomasPowers (of blessed memory) used to call “the stinky hammer”.

I picked up a set of used croquet mallets at a yard sale back then and Thomas approved of them at $5.00 U.S..

I make my wood Hammer/Mallet from some of the spacer blocks, in Pallet's. A section of a branch also works well. So simple, so many ways to do the same job, Yes, I also have a couple 'Stinky Hammers'.

Well, no. A come-along is good to have too, and freely admit it both flips and flops, but I meant that in a fix you can run a loop over perpendicular poles and use it as a makeshift winch.

Like this.

I picked this up at a thrift store the other day.  Thought it would look good out in my backyard smithy.

Another FB Marketplace find: a nice pair of trammel points in their original box. The eccentric points can be rotated for fine adjustment.

Also got a somewhat diminutive pickax from a yard sale, which will make a nice double-bick stake anvil.

(Not shown: refilled 40 and 20 lb propane tanks (one of each) and two new cylinders of oxygen.)

Nice score: a couple of boxes of bearings, shafts, and pulley wheels, from FB Marketplace for $10.

Looks like the bandsaw conversion project is back on the menu.

They only gave you $10 to haul all that off John?!:o

I guess it's true, there's one born every minute. ;)

Frosty The Lucky.

Considering that the bandsaw conversion project has been on hold for a very long time on account of the cost of parts (money that I’ve needed to spend on steel and propane), 10 bucks to get it back on track is a bargain.

Just ribbing you of course, John. We talked about your bandsaw project and possible ways to save money quite a bit a while ago. I stopped thinking about it but that's how my brain works anymore. <sigh>

Finding that box of goodies is a real stroke of luck and I'm glad for you. Heck now it's in mind I look forward to discussing it again.

Nice!

Yeah! I’m happy! Now I’m trying to figure out what to do with it! I already have a 3lb. drilling hammer, a few sizes of ball pein and a couple cross peins. I have a flatter, but not a set hammer. Maybe I will make it into a set hammer, or just keep it as is? Thoughts?

Slowing down or stopping for accident scenes or traffic is always an opportunity for good salvage. Nice find.

Too heavy for a set hammer, 3lbs. is a lot of inertia to overcome before it starts effecting the work.

The other issue that jumps out at me is the damage to the handle. Any plans for repairing it?

I have a Stanley 3 lb. drill hammer I got cheap as a bundle at a yard sale and it's darned effective but I rarely reach for it at the anvil. If I found another I'd put it up for trade at a club meeting or maybe an iron in the hat donation.

  • 2 weeks later...

My boss bought this a few days ago and said, I thought youd like to see this.

Nice travel anvil size. It would've been nicer if your boss had said, "I thought you'd like to HAVE this."

Are there any plans for this little old lady?

Good news and  bad news. The good news is that I stopped by HGR, my favorite industrial surplus warehouse, and picked up half a dozen angle grinders for about 12 bucks each.

The bad news is that HGR is now only doing pickup of prior sales and is otherwise permanently closed. Major bummer.
