JHCC Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Mail call! A five-pound tub of Greenpatch 421 to fix up my gasser. Quote
Julianb Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 Hello, I have found yet another small vise, I couldn't pass upon. Not for it being sold 250m away from my workplace. Slightly damaged, but for 25€... Cheers! Quote
JHCC Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 Very nice. Typical German side plates. One thing I like about this style of post vise is that it allows you to bolt it to the side of *any* height of post, rather than being limited to the height of a built-in, full-length post. Sometimes you want something at a lower height, so that you can hammer down on it more effectively. Quote
Daswulf Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Some helium tanks found their way to my shop. Planning on using the plasma cutter to turn them into jackolanterns. Quote
Frosty Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Maybe a jack'o'minion? We can call it Thomas. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
swedefiddle Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Good Morning, I made some Garden Wind Gongs, out of those. I used a 5 Pin, Bowling Pin as the Clanger. Makes a very mellow hollow sound, one that nobody will get annoyed with!! Clang On, Das Neil Quote

Daswulf Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Cool ideas Frosty, Neil. My buddy has a lot more plus I have some stashed somewhere. There are enough to try different things with. My favorite sounding garden gong I made out of a larger aluminum bodied fire extinguisher. I made a wooden ball as the clapper. Has a nice soft low tone. Quote
DNADave Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Picked up a whole pile of tools today along with a champion 400 blower with an oil dripper, a Columbus leg vice that’s a beast, a 126 lb beat up anvil and a homemade forge. some of the cutters have sticks for handles if you can imagine using that. Quote
Frosty Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Nice haul Dave, lots of sweet loot. By "cutters with sticks for handles" if you're talking about the "top cuts" you hit with a hammer to make cuts I see in the pics? A more common term is "Top Cut" and a generic term for them as a class is "Top Tool," I see a couple punches and a flatter A lot of the struck tools, top cuts, punches, etc. have pretty severe mushrooming and should be ground clean. Mushrooming tends to chip when hit, the SNAP sound you hear is the chip breaking the sound barrier and they are known for penetrating a person's hide through Levis, flannel shirts and eyelids. I love the oil cup on the blower, I'd be more than happy to have one for my blower even if it is after market. A . . . century after market. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
DNADave Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Thank you. Looking forward to a few nice fall days in the shop cleaning everything up and putting it back to use. Definitely going to grind off the mushrooms but may leave one as a wall hanger. Quote

Usually, they're not even wedged in place. I've used chunks of broomstick, pieces of pallet wood, and yes, even the occasional tree branch. Quote
Gazz Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 I have used top tools handled with hockey sticks and have some in my shop handled with tree branches or sticks and some with chair legs. So many top tools have come from yard sales or flea markets without handles and store bought hammer handles are more expensive than a curb found busted chair or a limb found in the yard and work just as well. Frosty Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 I pick up hokey sticks at the local high school gym during hokey season. There was a trash can outside the door where players stuck broken sticks, I picked up enough at one time to handle all my top tools and ended up giving most away at a club meeting. Being flat and rectangular hokey sticks make it a LITTLE easier keeping top tools vertical, straight, on the work. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
Daswulf Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 Quite the hokey story Frosty. did you make a hokey pokey? Just try not to get turned around, pokey sticks can be dangerous. Just kidding. Dunno if autocorrect is playing with you or if you did that for fun. I don't see too many hockey sticks around my area. Quote
Frosty Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 <sigh> No, I didn't need autocorrect to get this one wrong. I change channels away from hockey commercials, let alone games. To say I'm not a fan is grand understatement. I guess I didn't care enough about the game to spell the sticks right as anything but a good source of top tool handles. It's not just hockey, I'm no fun to talk sports with at all. Well except curling, I like and watch curling when I can find it. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
Daswulf Posted October 9, 2024 Posted October 9, 2024 I'm not a sports fan either Frosty. It's ok, I got a chuckle out of the misspelling. Quote
JHCC Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 Now I'm imagining a dance that combines winter sports with Japanese chocolate-coated biscuit sticks: the Hockey-Pocky! Quote
seldom (dick renker) Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 I handled about 10 top tools with limbs. Look like they belong on Harry Potter but work fine. Quote
Frosty Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 I'm going to have to do some imagining on that one John. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
Daswulf Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 Got both my mig co2/argon tanks filled today and went to buy a body work and other hammer lot off fb marketplace. It was an older body guy retired and he had a Lot of stuff but I was limited on funds. Got a load of hammers, a large paper cutting board, a Lil slide hammer and a "monkey on a stick" friction jack. Paid more than I would have liked but just the friction. Jack alone or the snap-on 56oz. deadblow would have cost what I paid and there are 12 other hammers , some body hammer that arent cheap and stuff. The premier w30 cutting board lists for over $400. New. Quote
