January 4, 20197 yr I've been watching farrier videos and notice almost all farriers dip their nail hole punches in some kind of lube each and every time they punch a hole. I cannot see what they are using or get someone to tell me what the lube is made of. Does anyone know?
January 4, 20197 yr Did you search "punch lube site:iforgeiron.com" on your browser's search function?
January 4, 20197 yr Author Are you talking about Plumbago and graphite? I did see anything about farriers using either one of these materials. Is it mixed with something to make a paste?
January 4, 20197 yr No I'm talking of over a dozen different lube mixtures described in various threads you get when you search on what I posted.
January 4, 20197 yr Its forshner's hoof packing. It works very well as tool lube and under pads on horses feet. I forget what it has in it exactly.
January 8, 20197 yr Moly Lube and Graphite works. CV Joint grease is heavy in Moly (that is what makes it Black and sticks like glue). Scale from around the base of your Anvil works well too!! I don't think it matters too much which you use, try to stop the punch from sticking. Use your big boy Hammer, tap it on the outside side of where the punch is to spring the punch free. Tap means, hit it like it owes you money!! Neil
January 8, 20197 yr My punch lube is beeswax and graphite powder, purchased as seed lubricant from the local John Deere dealer.
January 6, 20206 yr Use a bar of soap. It smells great and dissipates the heat for tool steel without fracturing the microcrystalline structure (as if you dipped it in water to quench). In a pinch, in the field, sand also works.
January 19, 20206 yr Depends, Punching out a nail hole usually either hoof packing or beeswax as previously said. Drifting through thicker stock which takes a few heats use a piece of coal or coal dust. Punches wont stick.
June 6, 20205 yr i used to use Forshners packed in the square tong hole under the horn. handy spot and lasts awhile.
