  1. Use a bar of soap. It smells great and dissipates the heat for tool steel without fracturing the microcrystalline structure (as if you dipped it in water to quench). In a pinch, in the field, sand also works.
  2. Hi Blacksmiths, I’ve been a blacksmith for over 10 years. I also shoe horses. I am a certified structural steel welder; and a newbie to manual machining. I joined this forum because I need to communicate with like minded individuals that understand the value in handmade items.
