oldlords
Hi, I'm interested in finding out information on this anvil. I'd like to know the approximate year of manufacture and any other information that can be offered. The serial number as far as I can make out is 38808. Thanks
njanvilman
If I am reading correctly, and the serial # is 38808, your anvil was made in 1898. It was made in Brooklyn NY. Hay Budden made anvils from around 1892 till 1928. They are considered one of the best brand anvils. Your anvil obviously has some use and chipping, but it is still fully functional for another few hundred years of pounding.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
I didn't realize that HB was only in business for 36 years.
njanvilman
Family troubles with the owners, the depression, and lessening demand led to HB demise. But in that 36 years, they made over 300,000 quality anvils!
BIGGUNDOCTOR
How many did Fisher make?
Frozenforge
AIA references over 400,000! I'm sure the Fisher Norris guru would be the one with a more accurate number.

According to their advertising, they produced somewhere between 500,000 and 600,000. No serial numbers, many years without dating, so an exact count is impossible. BIGGUNDOCTOR
Interesting because I see so many more Hay Buddens than Fishers...then again those of us with Fishers know that we have excellent anvils, and don't sell them off....

arkie
Dan, I believe that Mr. Postman would consider your posting of a page copy from his book a violation of copyright law here in the U.S, but I don't know about Canada.
SLAG
Mr. Arkie, Such use is copyright infringement in Canada, too. (under the Federal Copyright Act). It does not fall within the fair dealing exception, of the act nor jusrispudence of the Canadian Supreme Court. Mr. Postman could give that use his approval, but that is up to him. SLAG. Dan Mac
I do apologize I found the pic on the net and wasn't aware it was from his book. Just thought it was a list a list someone might have put together from publicly published materials. Won't happen again
arkie
SLAG, good info on the Canadian copyright laws also. Thanks for adding that.

Frosty
It's been a long party weekend and you know how blacksmiths, the 4th of July and parties are. Frosty The Lucky.
SLAG
Senor, Frosty, Great news about the party. I guess that the post-party hemodialysis and gastric lavage did the trick, and, now, you feel like a new man. Welcome back, amigo. Bully !! SLAG. Ahhh, just kidding compadre. I hope I don't reflect too badly on the traditional blacksmith community. We were in cognito as normal old folks. Normal! <shudder> Most trying aspect of the weekend was smoke from the fires making our eyes gritty, Deb and I went through a LOT of eye drops. Frosty The Lucky. SLAG
Jer, Sorry I missed the party. You seem to have survived the heat wave. Goody, that. SLAG.
Frosty
You and Marge would love Valdez, great scenery, good food, nice people. Halibut and Salmon fishing if you wouldn't prefer stream and lake fishing. If you want to go fishing that is. Bring rain gear though, it's usually not sunny and hot. Temp barely broke 70 today it felt a little chilly. I can't believe how fast I adapted to 80s! Frosty The Lucky.
