January 23, 201610 yr Here is the almost finished spider. I'm thinking of making a web behind it and there are a few small tweaks I want to do then it will get sealed and be done. I like trying to add forged elements to sculptures, this one is bolts as legs, spinnerets ( abdomen legs) pedipalp (mouth legs) , and chelicerae (fangs). Yes I looked that up lol. Hope it's creepy enough for the title. At the moment it's about 17#. I was initially concerned it would be back heavy but is balanced really well. 16" long by 13 1/2" wide.

I made one today too, but I used ballbearings for the eyes. Those hunting spiders have a whole bunch of eyes. I'll go take a photo of my spider and it can have a battle with Das's spider. Stand by.
January 23, 201610 yr OK, here's today's spider. It's loosely based on one of those jumping spiders. It has a pretty serious set of chomping apparatus (as anyone bitten by one knows) made for an old pair of bolt cutters. The abdomen is a horse shoe magnet from an old telephone. I went with ball bearings for the eyes - originally six, but it looked a bit much so I took two off. (Google images 'spider eyes' - it's scary!) Yours is a much bigger spider, Das, but this guy would put up a fair fight:

Probably nip the legs off mine I like the ball bearings for eyes. You have em set up great too. Ever see spiders eye glow in the light at night like cats eyes do? Thanks Nick.
January 24, 201610 yr Next time I drop a tool under the workbench I'll hook it out with a length of scrap, for some reason I don't fancy reaching into the dark...!
January 24, 201610 yr The face on view of yours is just plain scary Aus! Uh, do spiders actually have faces? Delightfully creeped out. Frosty The Lucky.

January 24, 201610 yr Ok, this is the stuff of my nightmares.....stop! I've long said I'll go to bed just fine if there's a snake in the house, no problem, but if there's a spider I'm sellin' the house....NOW! Stop with the pictures! (Girly scream fading as I run away....)
January 24, 201610 yr Das and ausfire, you guys have inspired me....I gotta go out and make some spider yard art!!!!!
January 24, 201610 yr Oh GEE, THANKS Aus. A simple yes would've done fine now I'm going too join Spanky less the screaming. Deb will be along immediately if she sees this pic. 6 eyes and hairy mandibles? Shudder. So much for naps in the living room, the cats keep the bugs under control in the bedroom. Damascus didn't earn the moniker Bug's Bane for nothing and the newest, semi-tamed ferral, Qiviut is just as determined to kill bugs. Frosty The Lucky.
January 24, 201610 yr Author Frosty, nothing better then active pest control. 8 minutes ago, rthibeau said: How often does Homeland Security check on you guys ??? I think they are too scared to check on me.
January 25, 201610 yr But the cats are pests in their own right. And I have friends in the "security" biz. Frosty The Lucky.

Cats are terrorists sometimes poor birdie, but I'm not doing anything they would care about. Just make creepy crawlers once in a while. And all my fire arms are legal lol
January 25, 201610 yr You should get a Macaw it won't be any time at all and the cats will be crossing to the far side of the room to walk past or make friends. Frosty The Lucky.

They are big and hairy and pretty nasty looking around the face, but generally they not venomous to any great extent and not as aggressive as some. Now a Sydney Funnel-web ... he's (or she's) one that you have to look out for. Anyway, Das, what are we going to frighten people with next??

I'll have to think on that one and let you know tomorrow. snakes are pretty much covered and drive my mother crazy..how about an Assassin Beetle. Those are pretty impressive.
January 25, 201610 yr Assassin bugs have very fearsome spear-like mouthparts and can inflict a serious bite. I think maybe I have enough creepies for the moment ... spiders, praying mantises, grasshoppers, dragonflies, mosquitoes, scorpions, redclaw, ants. Well, maybe one more spider, as I found some really nice looking slender brass/steel legs, and there just happened to be eight of them. I'm a bit light on for reptiles. Done snakes, turtles and lizards. Maybe a crocodile next? Or what about mammals? A possum with big round ball bearing eyes clinging to a tree branch. Hmmm. That would take more than a day! I'll look forward to seeing your next creation.

I found a rocker arm that I was thinking looked like a crocodile head but after looking at it more looks like a gecko more. So that's on the list. There's a skeletal fish on the list. Lol. So far I have a lot I want and need to do so if I find some pieces that fit something I've been sorting them to different piles or boxes until I get the rest of the pieces or the motivation to start on it. The assassin bug is interesting to me tho, and I think it would be a really fun build. I still have a dog and unicorn to make and they have been a little elusive to me on what I want to use. Some times ya just have to dig in and start somewhere.
