  1. Hey all: My latest forging session has me convinced that I need to make some tongs so that I can place shorter stock into my steel wheel charcoal forge. I'm a beginner, so my tongs will not be anything very big. Even if I use a large piece of stock and fashion both sides from a single bar, I still will need to make a hole for the rivet. Right now, I do not have any punches, so I thought I would make one. What is a reasonable rivet size for such tongs? 5/16"? 3/8"? 1/2"? I don't have rivets, so I will be making stock out of what I have. I guess I can drill out the rivet hole, but tha
  2. I live in coal country an there is a lot of heavy mining equipment to cut coal, sandstone or whatever else that run into miles underground. Here's my question they're are cutting teeth on the head of the continuous miner called Bits here's what the look like new, bad link 404 These things have diamond tips and eventually break the base is made from tungsten carbide, can I forge this? is it safe? is it going to give of deadly fumes? I don't know anything about this stuff. the mines throws these things away. I was seeing I could forge these things into useful tools that I could use aro
  3. Hi Guys, I have just been blessed with about thirty old school punches, hand fullers and chisels. After a week in a vinegar bath they are ready to go. Unfortunately i really do not have a good logical place (at the moment to store these so that i can use them without digging through a bucket or opening up 4 drawers to find what i am looking for. Anyone have a solution that works for them? Visual aids would be most welcomed. -c
  4. Just sharing a quick tip from my own experience. I often drill rather than punching for screws or nails. To drill accurately I need a good center punch. Many of the ones that I have made have NOT held up well in use... requiring frequent regrinding. One notable exception is one that I made from an old star drill! I just ground a nice point on the fluted (drill) end! That's it! No heat treating. It stays sharp much longer than most of my center punches and makes a nice starting mark! There are a lot of these old drills available in the marketplaces! Grab a few!
  5. This weekend i plan on making some punches and drift to start trying to make some make some wasted eye hammers and top tools. I have been talking to some people about design and am getting a better idea of the profile i should be looking for on it, and how to go about making it, and materials to use. I figured i might as well post and see what others punches and drifts look like so i can get some visual ideas of what people are working with, Thanks for sharing in advance!
