  1. I usually go by this method, but my pricing formula usually stays the same: Shop hours + 2X metal cost. This works for most things but...
  2. I'd go with banding it down to the wood with crossed strips of steel. Once it is banded down you can tighten it with pieces of wood. It also will help to silence the anvil.
  3. I don't see why we can't at least try. Even of we begin with only 50 or so people. It would be easier to get all the kinks sorted out with smaller groups.
  4. Yep, hot rolled steel is the best. Spring steel will ring too, but why waste it and it most likely would crack when quenched. Just bring it up to a yellow heat and quench it in water as fast as you can. :~)
  5. My grandfar gave me his 90 pounder like that. Just grabbed it by the horn and handed it to me like it was a stick.

I never thought of putting handles on my anvil like that! ;)
  7. I am thinking you may want to make the slab a bit thicker. I am thinking at least two feet thick and well reinforced with rebar. The rubber mat is a great idea along with a layer of oak. 4X4's glued together with the section under the anvil be made of end grain wood. http://www.newenglandblacksmiths.org/power_hammer_info.htm
  8. Euroanvil 300 weight (advertised at 335lbs but was 336lbs) New when I bought it, excellent condition. $985.00 USD With I think around $87.00 USD shipping. Love the thing all to pieces. I forgot to upload the photo :~(
  9. And not two weeks ago I just got the book! I notice what is listed as DuPont is a Fairbanks hammer in my book. Exact same illustrations and such.
  10. Come up to Dahlonega this Saturday. I will be demonstrating and you may find an anvil up here you like.
  11. I generally make it a rule that if it is worth welding once, it is worth welding twice. Every time I work on a welded joint I make sure it is a welding temp. Other here will tell you that it is not necessary but it works for me.

Oi! I saw that on Facebook!
  13. I make mine in the shape of treble clefts with 1/2 inch round. For a ringer, I use 3/8ths round as a handle with a small hammer head made out of 1/2 inc square. I heat up the center swirly part and quench it. I get some great sounds.
  14. This is a brilliant idea! I will tinker with my wood splitter to see if I can use it to cut patterns out with. It's a 12 ton press.
  15. I just ordered a book: Blacksmiths & Hammermans Emporium Freund, Douglas. It has about 20 pages on the Fairbanks hammers.
  16. I would! What kind of footing do you have underneath it?
  17. I wonder how many of us have named our power hammers. Claudia Maria Sarah Francesca Rigga. She was red headed and Italian. She is what people had in mind when they used the term "hot head." She could curse for a day and a half straight and never repeat herself, that added to her PhD in philosophy made sure I never had a dull moment!
  18. I am having elbow problems also, but it comes from splitting firewood and tossing the logs. It is technically tennis elbow. I am very lucky that shop work does not bother me at all. It's the radial motion that causes the pain (on the lateral sides of my elbows). Rest is the best treatment, then ice, compression and anti inflammatories.
  19. I nearly forgot, I have a customer that has an elevator business and is going to help me with the motor and wiring.
  20. Here she is folks! It may be a 150 # instead of a 125 #. The rust is just a breath thick and the flywheel can be turned by hand to work the hammer. It is much, much more than I had hoped for. I think I shall name her Claudia.
  21. I am a fan of Euroanvils. I have a 300 weight and love it! http://euroanvils.net/
  22. I am wanting to make a main hand knife that was used mostly as a defensive weapon for tomahawk fighting. I believe that the Huron war chief Maugwa (sp) use one in the movie, Last of the Mohicans. Yes Thomas, I googled it and have for a few years and have found nothing.
