  1. I have always used a hand's width, about 4 inches for all of mine. Just make sure that if the logs roll, they will roll that they will not roll out of the fire place.
  2. My Grand Father used a piece of 1/4 inc round to keep my attention. It was a VERY useful "seat of learning."
  3. My dad brought up my Great Grand Father's hammer. It is 4#'s and has a small flat face and a fullered larger face.
  4. I leave my contact information at building supply centers, hardware stores, interior designers, general contractors, and online stores that "sell that kind of stuff." I find that marketing is easier if I let other people do it for me. I get business for general contractors and they get business for me. Facebook has been a VERY valuable tool also. To sum up: Network, network, network...
  5. How long have you been making knives? I tried to find pics, but couldn't :(
  6. Welcome to our world! My favorite pattern welded (I don't use the term Damascus) materials are 1095 steel and a lower carbon/high silicon alloy. It can be hard to find here at times. I have found it makes very tough blades. I think the silicon keeps the carbon from migrating.
  7. How is the handle attached? I have not had good luck with purple heart due to the oils.
  8. He may be cranky at times but he seems to know his stuff, I think...
  9. I used a mortar and pestle made from an oak log and limb. It was still hard work but things turned out okay.
  10. I scored mine and cracked them with a masons hammer and it worked well too.
  11. I know a few of the folks with the Chesapeake group and they are all fine folks of different levels. You could do a lot worse.
  12. I saw the same thing up here with kayaking. These folks moved in from Atlanta and started paddling the rivers. Asking advice, help getting out of the rocks, etc... The very next summer, they showed up with a van with a "White Water School" logo, just full of city folk. I watched them the next few weeks standing on rocks imperiously pointing which path to take down the rapids. The didn't come back the summer after and I never asked what happened. When I was a grad student, I hired on to a new landscape company. (The owner mowed his on grass growing up and went to a week long landscape school.) I left him after two weeks... Funny thing about this place iforgeiron, it does not cost us anything, but we all profit. Thanks Glen!
  13. Oh, the hammer is near where I live in GA, not there. This gentleman bought two of them in 82 and has only used one. The only part he has salvaged is the motor and the belt. He used the smaller hammer because of the concrete slab he had.
  14. If I were closer to the creek, I would build a weir and run it with water power.
  15. Which one? http://www.baldor.com/products/ac_motors.asp
  16. All I am really worried about is parts. I will have to have them all machined because I don't think I will do business with the guy in PA who demanded to know how I got his phone #. That tells me he has had a LOT of unhappy customers. I don't think I will run it hard enough to cause any problems.
  17. I was afraid some one would say that. I thought it would be Thomas though!
  18. Okay, if I do get the hammer, I would do better to get a 3hp motor with low rpms. I also should pour a slab nigh on 3 feet deep with good rebar renforcements. Anchored with bolts and cushioned with oak. I am thinking of an oak/rubber laminate. Now pricing. I had been planning on making a Clay tire hammer. How much would that cost me to build from scratch?
  19. ummm, I spent years on the track and I can assure you, that the race horse can't pull as well as a clyde. Especially if he is on a treadmill. He won't go anywhere. B)
  20. I just got off the phone with a guy in PA that the power hammer page on anvilfire listed. He was not the nicest person I have ever spoken with. He actually demanded to know how I got his #, when it is posted on several power hammer pages. I am glad the machinist if a my friend..
