  1. hi schilpr, is there a helve or tilt hammer in the old shop you are going to visit? Many photos would be wonderful! AndrewOC
  2. G'day all, Newspaper article about our recent Forging in July effort; http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/smiths-want-rare-bays-to-forge-on-20130724-2qjgm.html special attention to Jake James (our beaut invited demonstrator and masterclass ringleader), Nigel (el-presidente), and Guido (keeps hammers bangin' at Eveleigh). Thanks to everyone else there- I had a great time and it appears the other 55 did as well. Interesting bit is about the local council of Sydney are expected to decide the next incarnation of Bay 1 & 2 by the end of the year... listenin' out! AndrewOC

  4. See; post number 5. I am probably stretching reality about getting it- woody and phil you would both be well deserving of it. Do ya think it is a five? That's what i remember the plate saying...but. A.
  5. Anyone got the weight of a 5 cwt Massey steam hammer handy? ...might need to find a crane truck. AndrewOC
  6. Great! I like the angle on the hammer handles, how are you finding it for use? AndrewOC
  7. Great stuff guys. David, sounds like you have seen these reports before! It does introduce a theme of "live/ interaction Interpretation' and 'activities and processes associated with the knowledge or use of mechanical arts and applied sciences'' (phew) - which I translate as a working workshop. Eveleigh operated from 1887 to 1988, so a broad 20th century scene should be ok, main focus could be industrial machine based- steam driven. MLMartin, I like particularly the idea of making quality items; there is a 1500 ton press after all. Thomas, good advice and '#6-teaching and profit' is a tempting challenge, see; http://www.canberraglassworks.com/live-glassmaking/ Jim, getting the machines on steam again would be a rare coup (like;
  8. 'nuther video. A 16 minute history of Eveleigh workshops;
  9. Hi All, There has been a call for comment on an 'interpretive strategy' for the historical Eveleigh Railway blacksmith's shop (at Redfern, Sydney, Australia), see http://rappoport-px.rtrk.com.au/reports/industrial What do you, my fellow smith's, think would best present this old joint? A search on our venerable forum came up with this interesting old thread; What other issues would have to be over come? Other similar examples in Australia are; Inveresk (Launceston, Tasmania) http://www.qvmag.tas.gov.au/qvmag/index.php?c=31 which I find sadly sterile and inert. Ipswich, Queensland; http://www.theworkshops.qm.qld.gov.au/Events+and+Exhibitions/Exhibitions/Permanent/Heritage+Railway+Workshops+Tours which I haven't had the pleasure of visiting yet. What have you seen- give good points and bad. Cheers, AndrewOC
  10. Back to Drewy's post #3, here is some video 'evidence' that has tonight been brought to my attention.
  11. Hi all, I have been long hoping to share this video I saw as an apprentice, but hadn't been able to find it- until today;
  12. Very resourceful! Don't be afraid to practice welding on more scrap steel- 'practice makes perfect'. Keep up the good work- next you'll be making a press or tire hammer ;) Andrew.
  13. Yep. If you can prove it works as good as an old cast one, there is a lot of room for conveniences. I'm thinking easy-to use adaptor for different size air pipe/ blower outlet. enjoy, AndrewOC
  14. Though, a sharp square edge is also good for a deliberate cutting edge. I made a small set hammer with a pair of radius edges and the others sharp. A.
  15. So who is going? Me, forgemaster, moony, drewy, probably jimdoc + 1... they will come out of the woodwork. or should that be ironwork? Shall be interesting to see how many Sydney-siders appear. A.
