  7. Next Sunday, 26th, is blacksmithin muck around day at Rozelle. C ya there, maybe? A.
  8. Nay worries! A busy life is a good one. Next open days will be October. I have been prompted to put together a 'business' plan for a permanent blacksmithing set-up there. ...next a ye olde shed. A.
  9. Mm. I'd try clamping it down to the wooden block you mount it on, that quietened an Australian made 150kg cast anvil I used to work on. Not exactly as pointy as yours, but worth a try, in my opinion. A.
  10. toolish: "Shame you live in a different state" well WE do! TTTG / SHF blacksmithin' workshop, this Sunday (26th May); Rozelle, Sydney. see also; http://www.tttg.org.au/php/tttg_Page.php?n=04 AndrewOC
  11. Find more detail at; http://www.csmm.com.au/field-days.html If you intend to smith, bring public liability insurance details that will cover you, eg if you are a card holder of NHMA and be familiar with the NHMA Safety Guidelines ( http://www.nhma.com.au/National_Historical_Machinery_Association_Inc_NHMA_Guidelines.php ) cheers, Andrew.
  12. This weekend (18/19 May 2013) Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum is having their autumn open day. A friend and I shall set up some blacksmithin stuff to demo; I'm expecting others to drop in as well. Anyone near enough to Sydney should come check it out, I hope to have enough interest to one day establish a club smithy there. See ya, AndrewOC
  13. Go do this course; https://www.tafensw.edu.au/howex/servlet/Course?Command=GetCourse&CourseNo=9282 I'd vouch for it. Or run a successful blacksmithin business... AndrewOC
  14. May I include an Aussie made clone? Called a 'Waratah' made by Hands and Scott. They appear in newspaper classifieds between 1909 and 1920 as blacksmiths (making castings??) in a suburb 11km south of central Sydney. see; http://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=11584 A few have appeared on Ebay over the years. AndrewOC
  15. does this help? http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/15290-1812-era-forge-wagon/ search '1812 era forge wagon' A.
  16. The welding training workshop at my tech college still has the same wood block floor from 50 odd years ago. Lots of sparks and gobs of spatter there! AndrewOC
  17. Was a fun weekend, even my missus enjoyed herself. Must admit I didn't do much, to often I bumped into someone I know and had to chat for half an hour;) Look forward to next year. So popular, space is getting a challenge! See you at Menangle (18/19th May) or Rozelle (26th). AndrewOC
  18. I could confess to having picked up auto wheel weights from roadsides since I was about 8 year old.... one day I'll make that repousse block... ;)=) A.
  19. That's great John! Shall we assume you mean Sydney in the Australian state of New South Wales? If you can magically make the 2+ hrs drive west of Sydney to Lithgow on the 21st, there is a fun 'Arts Festival with a metal edge' called 'Ironfest'. See http://www.ironfest.net/ and http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/32513-lithgow-ironfest-2013/?hl=ironfest and http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/32524-ironfest-lithgow/?hl=ironfest Unless you are jet-lag proof and have spontaneously flexible transport options, I'd be surprised if you could make it. Other events I know of are later in May. There are a few folk and volunteer museum smithies I could suggest, we shall keep posted. Check out http://www.theaustralianapioneervillage.com.au/blacksmith_25.html and http://www.shf.org.au/shf/HertWorkshp.html (where I am) and every second Sunday of the month at Netherby Cottage (Galston). Some detail may be seen at; http://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/recreation-and-facilities/parks-and-playgrounds/galston/fagan-park and http://www.parklandsforge.com/news.php There are still various businesses running around Sydney, it would be bold of me to invite you to someone else's workshop! A couple of these; http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search/listings?clue=blacksmith&locationClue=Greater+Sydney%2C+NSW&selectedViewMode=&emsLocationId=region-50036 may be possible for visits... Hopefully See you soon, AndrewOC
  20. See you all tomorrow. The Missus and I shall be there later on, taking a leisurely drive up from The Syd. AndrewOC
  21. I do have a handful of vices un-mounted, but the link is to a semi-portable stand that is in use. http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/28636-vice-on-tank/?hl=tank Next un I am plotting is a tooling rack just big enough to fit over a pallet jack, with a leg vice mounted on the end (maybe another on the opposite end). AndrewOC
  22. Well for starters, iron and steel swords are forged in a smithy, not (cast) in a Foundry. Also, how did the breaks occur? It is well known that swords were often bent to kill their 'powers', did this break some? Were they really broken in fighting, as the article infers? Have swords broken at particular corrosion points during burial? A.
  23. I'm no expert, but most oils are better than none. If you keep it oily, probably throw a cover over it to keep dust off. Just enough oil in the tup hole to lube things i 'spose . A.
  24. G'day Arbalist, I don't know what size number my S & B press is, but the 4th photo in this post might help you; http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/17640-sweeney-blocksidge-fly-press/?p=225083 The main retainer is a split gland nut type thingy... enjoy! AndrewOC
  25. On woodworkforum .au there is a regular 'poster' from The Can. Name is 'Ueee' (Ewan). Moony would know others as well. A.
