  1. Hahaha I see what you're saying. I hadn't thought about newer types of alloys coming out and the limited work done on them. I was thinking a little narrow minded I suppose with the fact that you heat metal up and hit it, weld it, heat treat it, temper it, etc. I am just amazed by this art. Every time I think im getting the hang of it I get severely humbled lol.
  2. In the same sense if there are a lot of new users that read the pinned posts then they won't ask the same questions as a lot of new folks do. That being said the website can still grow a ton and people can just read the previous posts. That's what I try to do unless I have a question that pertains to something kind of personalized that I cant find the answer to elsewhere. Also blacksmithing is a centuries old art. There isn't going to be a ton of "new things" come out. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say pretty much everything has been discovered with blacksmithing. With that being said this website should be for folks to talk about their experiences and help other people out. Just my 2 cents from a noob.
  3. I started thinking I wanted to make knives... Haven't made one yet. Turns out I just love making anything.
  4. Yeah thatd be a vise for looking at. Far to pretty to use. It's incredible work.
  5. Very nice!! I'm gonna put mine in the corner quietly now lol. I like them a lot. Did you weld the stems and grapes on? I don't have a welder.
  6. I love the idea. I would need a slightly larger pallet. I am a little rotund lol. Seriously though that's a cool idea.
  7. I really want to try that it may be a little big for my britches but I will try it. If I can get it to work itll be awesome.
  8. The ideas are great! and I see what you mean by the point frosty. Its not much of a point at all but I see where your coming from ill have to figure something out to remedy that. My wife told me I had better sell a few of them before I try buying anything else to support my habit haha. The only part I didn't particularly like is conversation is Thomas reminding me about Valentines day coming up .
  9. I like that idea Thomas thanks!!
  10. You too Mikey your advice on bigger is almost never better helped me a ton. I love reading what you write.
  11. Yeah maybe someday Ill have more of a need for a larger forge and maybe ill build one then but for now I'll take the advice and start small.
  12. Building the smaller forge is pretty much the direction I was leaning in. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something that a veteran at this saw that I didn't. The biggest benefit to trying to build the bigger one I see now is that it would clear up a lot of space. 50-60 pairs of springs can take up a fair amount of room lol. I'm glad you chimed in ThomasPowers. Your advice in especially in the gas forge section is what made me realize that bigger is not better. I will be building the smaller forge... eventually. Thanks for your opinions everyone!
  13. I've thought about that I was more just thinking about having nice long rods waiting for when I may need them. I can usually get about 3 feet off a spring before I can't hold onto the spring anymore.
  14. I'm very glad I found this site I have been contemplating building a gas forge for a little while now. Like most people who don't know much about them or their efficiency (still don't). I was going to go big because everyone knows bigger is better. Well after a few hours of reading up on this site I have determined that I should actually build a rather small one as nearly all that I work on is small and I have a coal forge for larger projects. One of the main reasons a large forge would be ideal for me though is I have access to a nearly unlimited supply of coil springs. I watched this video and it seems to be the absolute best way of utilizing them. So I I'm not sure which way I should go. Any ideas? I guess I could just make both haha
  15. Thanks! I will put a leaf on one eventually.
  16. It may have read differently than I meant it. I really like this anvil. I'd love if it were my own. I'm just saying that I don't have much in general.
  17. Here are about the only things I've actually made. I made my first one for my wife for Christmas. The second one she asked me to make so she could give it away at our house party. The third a lady at church liked them and asked me to make one for her daughters birthday.
  18. Here is the anvil I'm using. A good friend let me borrow it. It's a rough and ugly 150lb Vulcan. Not much but I like it.
  19. My brake drum forge is huge. I don't know the dimensions. I was thinking bigger is better. It certainly is not. I use so much coal its kinda ridiculous. I really didn't realize it for a long time and now its about time for a replacement because its warped and cracking. My advice would be to use the smaller drum or a brake disc.
