  1. My wife's family owns a few different farms in the valley we live in. Her cousin does the farming at the farm right down the road. He was going through an old shed and rolled this monstrosity out. He thought it might be a forge. After I originally looked at it at night I was certain that it wasn't. I went back up today in the daylight today. I'm still thinking it is not a forge but I can see how it could work as one. I took a few pictures the one has a five gallon bucket lid on it to show the size. The concrete slopes from the edges down to the center "firepot". The "firepot" center is metal. I believe it is wrought iron along with the ring that goes around it. Any ideas if it is an old forge or what it may be?
  2. Failing is when you learn the most. Just make sure you're paying attention and you'll see where you failed and hopefully be able to figure out a solution.
  3. My friend at work has a grandfather that he claimed has an anvil. I asked him to take some pictures of said anvil. After seeing pictures of said anvil I really want to make a deal on it. his grandfather said to him, "yeah I have an anvil, I don't know where it's at, but I don't think I want to sell it." My friend thinks he can talk his grandfather into selling it he says. I sure hope he does. Anyway I see it's from Sweden but does anyone know any more about it?
  4. I haven't been able to fire up my forge for more than a week and a half now due the the weather. (Mainly due to my forge is an outdoor brake drum forge) the weather has either been very windy or raining/snowing. And even though it is 11F out the wind slowed down a bit and I fired the forge up. I was able to be out there for 3 hours. My mustache and beard would freeze up every time I moved away from my fire. My project didn't turn out exactly like I wanted it to, but close enough I am pleased. Nonetheless I feel great right now. Just wanted to share.
  5. I'm not trying to brag... but I can take a 1/2" round bar and completely ruin it to the point you'd have a hard time telling what it started out as.
  6. I actually have looked into that. I have the anvil set at a good height, my forge... not so much. it will be the next thing I work on. my back injury wasn't from blacksmithing though its from being bullheaded and trying to convince myself im still as able bodied as I was when I was 21. Thanks for the reply. see ya around.
  7. I just wanted to say hello to everyone. I started playing around with "blacksmithing" in the early spring of this year. I had some serious back problems (again) in the middle of the summer and it really put a damper on my progress. (Perhaps the whole lifting up metal moving it all around and swinging a hammer incessantly isn't the best hobby for me.) I do really enjoy it though and I finally feel that I am starting to understand it a bit i.e. I haven't burnt anything in half in my forge for a while. Anyways I'm excited to learn more and really enjoy my new hobby. I spend most of my time with my family. I love hunting and fishing. I used to tournament bass fish... hit me up with questions lol.
