  1. Still a kid. Have alot to learn. I'LL post some pics of a header that i'll try to make
  2. Thanks frosty. funny you mention bad authers, editors... as i mentioned before, I am a steam engine enthusiest and have run many. One day I was at a steam show and I was being interviewed by the local newspaper, because I guess 13 year old boys in to old suff is rare... Anyways, they made many mistakes in the article, but the worst for me was that I said that it can take as much as 2-3 hours for the boiler to heat up but they put 23 hours in the newspaper!
  3. Thanks for the replies! I recently talked to Alec on the phone and he gave me some good advice, and so did all of you. This project will take quite a while, but I will try to post a couple pictures and maybe a video along the way. Thanks again, Ethan
  4. that is a great way glen. but I would love to heat a 4'' plate up a drift it, but I don't know if that will happen
  5. I have always loved old books on blacksmithing and steam engines. I have an old book that has a cast header in it somewhere but don't quote me on it, I'll go look it up.it is a faint memory. and maybe I was mistaken, it could have been cast steel or drop forged! brain fart... I never thought of a spring!
  6. wow thank you for the detailed picture! how thick is the plate?
  7. my parents had to help me pay for it... I believe it was $350 or so, but we customized it allot. like having a round body with a hex head so it looked like my other punches.I am quiet proud of it!
  8. thank you for the complements. I might have to kick up the price
  9. this forge is one me and my dad help me build 2 years ago and it is set up great for me.only trouble is I can't move it...
  10. those are beautiful! my headers keep braking, and I really want to find one of those old, cast iron headers.
  11. hi frosty. for a thirteen year old boy its pretty special. I got it made in Edmonton Alberta, by a company called Stampco. it was a very custom order!
  12. I cant really tell, but in the pictures, it looks like the edges are very sharp. if you were to dress the anvil more, it could prevent more chipping even if hit directly.
  13. have a couple more... two 12 lbs, and one 10lbs. these I use.
  14. hear is some that I make. as most say, these Fly of the shelves! I sell them for 10$ at fairs and museums that I volunteer at.
  15. any tap stick(hammer) it accepted!
  16. I believe fisher anvils have a cast iron base.if you look at one of my anvils, its a Vulcan, and that is apparently the same as the fisher, but it is not as good because it doesn't have an as round of horn.
  17. I saw some one on YouTube doing this but cant find the link.
  18. wow... that is one thick plate! that would make one heck of a striking anvil. I would make sure that the plate sides are flush with the base so if your bending something 90 deg. the base won't be in the way.
  19. I saw an anvil on kijiji a couple of days ago. its was about a 190# peter wright, repaired with a welder and then re-hardened. it was listed for $1400! I guess some people will pay that much, but for a 13 year old boy like me, that's about 2-3 time the money I could image paying.
  20. this is my biggest so far. its a 14 lbs postmall!
  21. this is a peter wright that ads up to 99 on the hundred weights. this is a 3 leg medal stand with a 1 1-2'' plate! there is also a Wesco cast steel anvil, Vulcan, and what I believe to be a arm and hammer anvil on the post.
  22. Show everyone your forge, and tell us why its the best! this forge is one me and my dad help me build 2 years ago and it is set up great for me.only trouble is I can't move it...
  23. thank you to everyone. I have a idea floating around in my head that I will try to make and I hope to upload a picture tonight!
  24. thank you! I am new to the site so I haven't figured out it all yet. this is very useful!
