  1. little smaller hammer than you usually make... haha. by the way, looks even better in person...
  2. I think that would work... if you have the ability, forge a drift. the forging of the ends of the hammers will likely result in slight deformation of the eye in the tool. therefore you may need to slightly drift the eye. Ethan
  3. a fine catch! to bad people are considering throwing this stuff away!
  4. Ethans back from England!(a month ago) hahahaha I have been kept busy with craft shows, classes, school, and more forging! I will have a video up in a day or so, showing the 75lbs of tools I got back from 6 good days of forging. i thought and laughed to myself about how ugly some of the tools were that i had posted before going to Britain(such as the 4.5 rounding hammer), some have since been re forged. Any way, i got a short video of alec steele and i striking on the worlds largest flater!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKAz34dcUr8 Ethan
  5. make sure your anvil is holded down securely! (like the stand bolted to concrete.)

  9. I good friend of mine, dave, gave my this tool along with some much needed parts for the steamer. it looks like an od type of vice grip maybe. if anyone can shed some light on this that would be great! P.S. you are invited to come to vegreville alberta this Saturday to the fair. we will have our steam engine their along with a couple others, I will also be playing fiddle for the weekend.
  10. the first hammer is 2.75lbs. The second 3 and some..........................yes there is now a second! a new friend Dustin came today to make his first hammer. he is a great striker and had the best time making his hammer! his hammer is about 3lbs.

  12. Finally have the pics. one is a Vulcan, the other, mystery!
  13. I just wanted to put up a pic of all the tools posted here so far. I also wanted to redeem myself because some of the handles were just put on so they had one. As frosty said they went as good as they could have been, I fixed that! Anyway, here we go.
  14. its finished! with its new hickory handle (hand made by me), I am pretty proud of it! its a little, marked up because I did it all under the trip hammer, but I like it! another announcement; I now have ALL the tools to make a Brazeal hammer, and hot cut!
  15. some time I want to make one good one out of flat metal that has many different holes, so I it can hold different tongs.
  16. I totally forgot about this! I try to fallow through with what I say so here's the tong ring/clip I came up with!
  17. Ethan Harty reporting live: just made a 5/8 top fuller! first tool made under the LG. credits to my dad for striking for the hole. I have not finished it yet so any recommendations for finishing/handling is great!
  18. thank you everyone for the replies, and to frosty for the great explanation(and doing it again)! I have not observed any cracks, so I must be lucky. I know why; its frosty the lucky!(hahaha really bad joke) pics coming soon. I am very busy because the farm is going into hyper drive to get hay cut (because of bad drought) but I am trying hard to reply and upload all these pics! its great fun!
  19. thanks frosty for the tips. when I went to the welding shop they said they had a good rod for welding anvils because the did it before,(not that, that means very much) it works great for me so far, and as you said I don't think I damaged it that much. to answer you question about preheating, I did not, because I thing it would have taken out the hardness(is this bad?) I wanted to weld up 2 more anvils(Vulcan) with very bad edges(I will upload pics) and so any tips or recommendation are appreciated!
