  1. OK, Paul, how did you do the flint look? Nice knife! Dave
  2. Muratic Acid, equal part with water, Use cold. 2 hours and the scale rubs off with your hands. Do NOT store or use it in your shop [all your tools will rust badly]. Keeps for a long time. Courtesy of Bill C. Dave
  3. Very nice and lots of thought. I will PM my address for next year :) Those are all perfect gifts! Dave
  4. Very graceful and organic looking- who cares how many petals? I like them all! Dave
  5. Read more carefully- home maid anvil It is for the use of the maid, at home..... Dave
  6. I am a fairly new mig welder and am having problems using the magnetic welding clamps. They seem to interfere with the welding process- almost like unhooking the ground connection. A good bead and settings, weld a little, good quality, then add the magnetic clamps and it all turns to crap, spitting, popping and the bead all forms on one piece of metal with none sticking to the other piece being welded. The side with the bead can easily be knocked off. What am I missing here? Can't use the mag clams with mig or ??? Thanks, Dave
  7. I am no expert but if it isn't usable as if try to repair it whatever way you are able with whatever materials you already have. How much more unusable can it get? You will probably learn a lot with the repair, too. That's a good thing :) Dave
  8. Good decision, YYF this is a very nice AND practical piece. Thanks for sharing. Dave
  9. Thank you very much for sharing your skill and idea! I will try this next week. Dave
  10. Good info if your customer is paying good money! Thanks for sharing :) Dave
  11. Great job on this knife.Love the filework, the composite pins, the bolsters, the flowing lines,,,, you get the idea:) Dave
  12. Supergrit Abrasives- Norton Blaze Orange belts
  13. Just a quick note to pass along an idea from my shop- I flat sand and belt sand many small items that are hard to hold- I just make a small 'handle' from scrap wood and use a hot glue gun to attach the handle and the item to be worked. Let is sit for 20 minutes, then sand away. When you are happy with the work, tap the handle sideways with a sharp rap and it will easily release. Dave
  14. Mark does make the fit ups look easy! I never want to buy another anvil, so won't pound them out on my anvil hardy- no use for a busted heel-anvil :) I do have a power hammer so I can get close with that and then hand finish on the anvil face. If I didn't I wouls do all the work on the anvil face. Dave
  15. Thanks, everyone. The pipe for this one was 3/4 inside diameter heavy black pipe. It will work with any size- and any wall thickness. The thin wall pipe is VERY easy to crush, then you can saw it off and start over [ask me how I know that]. Dave
  16. Thank you again, for sharing your knowledge and experience with us and for taking all the extra time with this. I loved the two tools from your last work with the chain! Danged if I would n't just make a few more tools that I would use. Can't get that hammer out of my head. I have 4 Bailey hammers that I love and use. So another hammer in a different style would fit right in. I use a scribe in the shop- a Damascus scribe would be gorgeous! And you would feel the satisfaction of this billet every time you used the tools. Dividers wojuld be cool, too. Rein rigs would be a hoot! Bet you would get great satisfaction when folks visit your shop and see the tools you made [i sure would!]. What ever tools you use would be the perfect projects. Again, my sincere thanks- you have allowed me another avenue to express myself, too. Dave
  17. Thank you for taking the time to make and edit this tutorial and sharing your hard-earned experience. I book marked it! Dave
  18. I was talking about the problem with a buddy- he said he runs his weed torch straight from the bottle. Ran it with a straight hookup and it works exactly the way I had hoped. Lots more heat than the hand-held, not as much as the weed burners- perfect for my low wooden ceilings. Happy camper here- now have a good alternative to starting the forge for small, quick work. Matt- you were on the right track Thanks to all Dave
  19. I got out the weed torch for a pic today, and decided to try it again. It would light with the ignitor but then go back out. I lit the little hand-held torch to light it with and while fooling with it my brain finally kicked in and I realized that the normal working position for a weed burner is pointing down. Pointed it down, hit the ignitor and it fired right off and stayed lit. Sheesh! Not a full burn like I want but will try it with a larger regulator with higher gas pressure. Current pic attached. [or maybe not, until I read up on the procedure here to post pics- will add the pic if able later]. My shop has a low wooden ceiling and I am not comfortable with O/A indoors, so this [smaller that a normal] weed burner is to use when I don't want to fool with the forge [installed a large chimney/hood over the forge] for localized heat. Thanks for the suggestions.... Dave
  20. My drill press capacitor died- have to start it by hand. Tool it to a local place where I go and he said that Delta did not offer the capacitor- have to buy the whole motor. Nothing printed on the capacitor. I won't pay $175 fort a capacitor. Anyone have any thoughts about how to find what capacitor I need? Thanks, Dave
  21. I will get some pics tomorrow and post them. Thank you for all the suggestions. Dave
