  1. How about some pics as you move along with the build, Jeff? Always interested in other peoples projects :) Dave
  2. Paul, I am still looking for about 20 feet of inch and a half cable to try my hand. Any idea where I might try? Dave
  3. You are doing a superb job, Paul. You also put a lot of thought into your planning for the new one! Dave
  4. Weltall, spend some time on youtube while waiting on materials to make your tools. If you search for blacksmith you will find T O N S of ideas, and watching them you will start to see the same techniques over and over and over. Those are your money shots. I like your forge! Dave
  5. Nice shop! I remember how excited I was when I did mine. And then the shed. And then the second shop. They ain't NEVER big enough! What goes where? Dave
  6. My best tool would be Brian Brazeal. He would be installed in the shop and I would take out new projects every other day or so. He would have weekends off :) Dave
  7. I have an older Kinyon style that I absolutely love. Take the time and finish the job- it will be well worth it. Many years of great service! Dave
  8. Had a nest built in the shop a couple years back. As the babies were learning to fly momma moved her nest onto a cabinet and inside my fishing vest. When they could fly they shifted to outside. Kinda fun to watch them grow. About a year ago the bats decided they wanted to nest inside the barge board outside the shop. Every once in a while one will come inside for a quick turn or two around the inside of the shop. The they return to the barge boards. Gave me quite a start the first couple times. They are welcome to stay as long as they like :) Dave
  9. Great video's, both! Laertius you avatar caught my eye- I have an old 68 Chevy stepside shortbed I been working on and driving for about 10 years now. Dave
  10. This is good info- please do let us know what finally works for you :) Dave
  11. Hey Eric! Glad to see your post. Can't help with the steel temp but good to 'hear' your voice again! Dave
  12. Hey, Eddie- That's a great contact. You can buy an air chisel pretty cheap and convert all that 'junk' into good stock. I make a lot of roses from the body parts and tools from the suspension parts. Let it sit in your shop for a couple days and let you mind work on it. Stock that can get ruined is also a great time to try stuff for 'free'. Dave
  13. Nice score, worn or not! Dave
  14. Gary Huston [on you tune] actually drill the end of the rod, threads it to the bottom of the hole, then uses a screw to hold everything together. I square the end of the rod and drive the petals with their round holes over the square rod. This prevents things from turning and peening the end down locks everything up solid. Hate doing the final shaping and having a set of petals come loose. Those end up landing at the far end of my shop. Pick a way and try it for several roses. If you are happy keep that way. if not, select another way and try it for a few roses. Where are the PICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? Dave
  15. Jeeze, guys, I already have too many things I want to make. I saw Gordon do the marble at NWBA spring conference this year and decided not to think about it. Will now put this idea at the top of my list for next week. Good job, guys! Dave
  16. Dave Hammer posted a aspirated burner that he made on YouTube. GREAT burner. Dave
  17. Nice work on the hooks. The thirty minutes will go down as you do more work with them. Hooks are good because of all the skills you must use to get them from stock to hook. I usually make a batch of hooks once a month or so. Dave
  18. My closest almost was one day when I was routing a square hole in the end of my table saw for an insert. As I was plugging in the router this little voice said 'hope it is not turned on' but I finished plugging it in. The high torque router motor went crazy, spinning and bouncing across the saw table. So the second stupid thing I did was to grab it to prevent being damaged when it hit the floor. The lucky thing was that the bit hit my left middle finger with enough remaining torque to spin y hand away when it hit. I ended up with a very clean cut to the leave the bone exposed. Lost only the fingernail and some meat and was thankful that the damage wasn't worse. Could easily have lost that hand. Now I stop whatever I am doing when that little voice talks to me. Thanks to all for sharing- maybe we can learn a little from one another and not have to do every stupid thing ourselves. Dave
