  1. For some reason my local scrapyard consider this sub-grade steel and charged me accordingly. I didn't argue with them. The press frame in the back was slightly more expensive.
  2. Definitely a cleco. I hope you've got the pliers that come with it. I don't use mine much but when I do they are indispensible.
  3. Start making jewellery. It doesn't take as much space, it will please the wife and you can upscale a lot of the skills and tooling to blacksmithing later. And the jewellers anvils are really cute. But starting off by hiding it is not a good idea.
  4. Just to prove that it is possible. About a month ago I didn't have space on a table in the workshop to put a clipboard down. Now it is cleaner than it has been in many years, everything, including the cupboards and drawers, has been sorted and cleaned. The only stuff around is work in progress. Now I have to start on my forging area.
  5. To add a bit of confusion, the plans only say 15' Rigid two seater, and the plans is by Tyne Folding Boats. I've decided years ago I do not get involved in debates, so I for this thread I will call it a boat. If you build your own you can call it whatever you like. This one hasn't folded yet.
  6. I build this a while ago. Somehow it doesn't look as good when skinned. Sorry, no blacksmithing involved.
  7. If they can do it with ships a table shouldn't be too difficult. http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Degaussing
  8. I always use this system.
  9. I'm borrowing this, I have people to say that to.
  10. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I talk the loudest to myself when I stand in the middle of the workshop having absolutely no idea what I was busy doing.

  12. Cape Town is about as far from the equator as Los Angeles.
  13. I've never seen snow, except in pictures.
  14. Last? What do you mean last? You cannot stop now, these are the best I've seen, and you have to continue. Please!
  15. I've bought these no-name torches a while ago in a pawnshop, not really having an idea what they could be used for . A lot of googling has led me to believe it is air/propane torches, but information on this is very scarce, or I just cannot find the right words to use. Do anyone know how these work, and what they are used for? And what should I use for an air source? They are 220mm ( 9 inches) long. Thanks
  16. Nice work. Those are the some of the best railings that have been posted on IFI in the last week, and I've never made a railing as good as that.
  17. Jacques replied to basher's topic in Swordsmithing
Simplicity is beautiful. A question: Why is it called a short sword? At what stage is it a knife and when does it become a long sword?
  18. And on reading this I suddenly realised I cannot really answer those questions. I've done lots of spot-,arc-, mig-, oxy-acetylene- , some (not very good) forge welding and even some tig welding, but just having done it doesn't mean that I am an expert or know the theory or are able to teach. But I am glad that there are people like Glen and Andrew, who are willing to do all the schlep of the hard work that making and keeping a website like this up and running. And quite probably most of us will never get a glimpse of the time involved.
  19. Goodness gracious. If that is as big as I think it is you are a very brave man. Edit: had a look at your website and saw "turned patterns up to 7 ft dia". Amazing work, patternmaking has always intrigued me.
  20. A little bit of reading goes a long way, even if it is just to teach you the right terminology. A quote I found recently, my italics. -and yes, I did check, the guy exists and the website exists (today)
  21. <--------- My mother used to think I am beautiful
  22. Very nice collection of steel there. I will swop you my anvil for it. :P
  23. Ah yes, but I'm not married. Therefore I'm allowed to indulge in my fantasies.Just a pity I can't afford them.
  24. My brother-in-law is a Englishman and he was very surprised by all the advice he got from the government, including help from some sort of agency for small business. Talk to the people who administer the laws.
  25. I saw one in a pawnshop once for less than the price of a cheap hand drill, and the bloody woman I was with at that stage were angry because I dragged her in there so I left it. Can still kick myself.
