  1. Good morning all I made one of these for the blacksmith club holiday party and is has expanded form there. Thankfully I didn't start when this thread recommended I should. Good Holidays! -grant
  2. Good morning all In my neighborhood hot rolled bar comes in 20’ lengths and cold roll in 12’ lengths. I realize that hot or cold rolled is a finish process but can one assume that cold roll is 1018 and hot roll A36. I have not been able to get a satisfactory answer from the supplier; it’s all mild steel to him. Tks grant
  3. Spank -That was not a back handed editorial comment aimed toward you. I think your cake spatula is very elegant. -grant
  4. Good morning all Is the HVAC duct work coated? Several years I used some for tin roofs on bird houses and bird house book ends, Then we had the Pa-Pa Wilson accident and I began to wonder if that square ducting was zinc plated. -grant PS I had no idea that vittles was spelled victuals - so If the Frostman says you can eat it, it must be food safe.
  5. Good morning all Frost man, thanks for joining in. Yes, there have been times that the judicious use of the weed burner aided the transition and it’s not to say that with more coke on hand and gentle fire management the problem could be not mitigated. But it is enjoyable to speculate. My initial thoughts are that a burner and air blast would be introduced into the stack. The burner would initially be used to warm the stack and burn the excess smoke during start up. Once a stable forge fire is achieved the fuel part of the burner would be shut down leaving the air blast to complete the combustion of the smaller particulates and Bob’s your Uncle. -grant
  6. I just noticed that the pictures that go with the above link are have either been deleted or the link lost during one of the upgrades to IFI. The link doesn’t make much sense without them. So:
  7. Good morning all. Strawhouse This is the conjecture part. My shop is in the country, but I do have neighbors. In fact one house is directly downhill from the shop and while they are on board, so far, I would like to clean up the coal forge at start up. To this end I have been thinking about enlisting Frosty’s, and other knowledge person’s, on this form, to help to design a small propane burner and fit it into the stack, this would be used to burn the smoke at start up and one could use it to enhance the draft. This is a taste of what I’m thinking. This air injection system would work for start up if the smoke were hot enough to combust with the additional air blast; I suspect this is not the case. However, this system should work a treat once the forge is up to temp and operating normally; air injection no additional heat source. In fact a version of this was the first emission controls on vehicles in the USA, engine driven air pump plumbed to the exhaust manifold. Any who, this is my rambling for today. -grant
  8. Good morning all strawhouse, Hofi states that this system is good for a 6' horizontal run. http://www.iforgeiron.com/page/index.html/_/blueprints/uri-hofi-series/bp1048-side-draft-chimney-r175 Then see if you need help with the 25' vertical lift. -grant ps I can't seem to get this page to link. Go to IFI pages, Uri Hoffi Series, blue print BO1048 pss I guess it did link -grant
  9. Good morning all Russell - on the low end of your PSI scale, Brosters (pressure deep fat fryers} use pressures of 12 to 14 psi with oils heated to frying temp. -grant
  10. Good morning all Oh good; you mentioned the chain sprocket again. I was looking for an excuse to post this picture. It may incent you to scrounge through the chain pile. -grant
  11. good morning all I'm curious, how does one go about breaking an anvil in such a fashion? It is a very elegant repair. -grant
  12. Good morning all In the vain of beating a dead horse, i think we are confusing twisting and wrapping. If we twist around an axis, that axis does not change, does not change if it is the center of a 1" square bar or the center of four 1/4" square bars. Now wrapping is a hole different deal. I expect we have all built some fence and the angle the wires cross determine the number of wraps for a given length of wires and this is clearly a case for an empirical study. -grant
  13. I wondered what happened to the Kid, is your side kick still around. ;) -grant
  14. Thank you gentlemen -Are you buying bags of Sewell seam coal? This is more difficult than I imagined. I found someone selling "Pocahontas" blacksmith coal, on E-bay, in bags I'm familiar with, however I wouldn't necessarily expect them to give me the name of their vender. I did expect someone on this list would know where ABANA is getting their conference coal, or some club would be bringing in a full load that would share their experience or even perhaps a retailer on the east side of the Mississippi. It could all be coming from Penn Keystone but so far I haven't spoken to anyone that has done business with them. By full load I mean 18 pallets, 50 - 50 pound bags per pallet, 22.5 tons. -tks grant
  15. Good morning all Glenn, yes this is true, however if you are contemplating a group purchase of 22.5 tons of blacksmith coal one would hope there exists a consensuses of "coal you want". I have seen a couple of different styles of bags referred to a Pocahontas Blacksmith Coal. I assume they are coming from one of the Pocahontas seams. One style of bag had blue markings and one has a picture of a blacksmith on it. It may have been early late styles from the same company. When ABANA comes to town they bring bags of "Pocahontas Coal". Several other clubs bring in truck loads of "Pocahontas Coal" for their blacksmithing communities. I'm trying to determine the major suppliers of bagged blacksmith coal, witch one we should be working with, and what other pit falls I'm missing. -tks grant
  16. Good morning all Is all the bagged Pocahontas Blacksmith Coal coming from The Penn Keystone Coal Co? http://www.penncoal.com/wst_page4.html The club, Rocky Mountain Smiths is considering bringing in a load and I am tasked with providing a proposal. Any who, I found the Penn Keystone company, but wondered if there are other suppliers. Any insight into this venture would be appreciated. -tks grant
  17. Good morning all tundra It will take a very elegant sign to compliment that bracket. Nicely done. May we have a picture with the sign? -grant
  18. Good morning all Espen – attached is a picture of a drive belt on a rivet forge. Unfortunately it doesn’t show the splice. I went to the leather goods store bought a ¼ inch thick leather strap 1 1/4 wide, punched holes in the ends and lashed it together (butt spliced)and Bob’s your Uncle. -grant
  19. Good morning all insurance update I got a quote from the agency that advertises in The Anvils Ring, Industrial Coverage Corp, for liability coverage of 1 mil each occurrence with a 2 mil general aggregate for $425 per year. This covers the shop and demos. In addition there is 2 mil for products and completed operations, 1 mil for damage to rented premises and several other related items. The agency wrote the liability insurance through Hartford. I though it was a great deal and in line what what others on this thread have reported. There were no questions about what is being manufactured, so the weapon's issue was not an issue and although they advertise in the ABANA publication no-one ask if I was a member. I did need to stay after them, calling every couple days, but they were very cordial, helpful, and understanding. -grant The above is a cut and paste form this tread. This is a annual police that just renewed. Hartford automatically sends out certificates for all events that one classifies as reoccurring. I do not know if they write single event coverage; but you might give them a call. At $400 a couple of paid demo days pays the annual premium. -grant
  20. Good morning all The new edge of the anvil by Jack Andrews, this is a general blacksmithing reference. The general consensus is to learn the basic blacksmithing techniques before specializing. This is the basic reference for several week long beginning blacksmithing classes. And I second Thomas’ the $50 knife shop by Wayne Goddard. I would save the Hrisoulas books for the transitional moment to very serious hobby. - Grant
  21. Good morning all- What happened to PeregrineStudios? Did we run him off? -grant
  22. good morning all trauma -The candle holder is very elegant. It seem to be about 2 and ½ wine bottles high; where was is designed to sit? -grant
  23. This has been ask several times, however I don't recall a compelling answer. How does a cast iron fire pot that melts 2150 - 2360 degrees F hold a 3,500 degree F fire. -tks grant
