  1. Good spring all MattO The shop looks great. Is that a stamped concrete floor that you built? It looks very authentic. I looked for a date for your hammer-in at the Pirie Blacksmiths Association site; ABANA has www.pbsmiths.com as your site but address does not seem current. Any who nicely done -grant
  2. good morning all - were blacksmiths +- a 1/10 is plenty good enought. ;) -grant
  3. Good Morning all Looks very good Matt; It is pleasing to see you are surviving the winter. That is a great stove, does she burn wood and coal. It would be hard for me to keep the coal straight. -grant
  4. Good Morning All EGreen -This should help if is was the TW-90 you are looking for http://www.twuertz.com/. This should help if not https://sites.google.com/site/vorpalcustomknives/shop-techniques-3/grinders. -grant
  5. Good morning all -Nicely done; the transition is spot on. Did you do some grind and shine before you twisted? -grant
  6. Good Morning All Thanks John. That is an elegant solution for an idle circuit. I would like to confirm the optimal impeller RPM and see how close I can match it with a contemporary motor. I had hoped someone had some experience with this and we could have a consensus, however some testing seems to be in order. On a worm drive if one divides the number of starts on the worm into the number of teeth (for lack of a better term) minus 1 on the worm gear do you get number of worm revolutions per rotation of the worm gear? -thanks all grant
  7. Thanks Frost Man for the reply Do I understand you correctly; you are direct driving a paddle style fan at 1728 rpm using 1/3 HP and it "works a treat". I have no idea what RPM this style of fan/blower combination will cavitate, come from together or crash the impeller into the case. So I'm moving delicately. A little background may be helpful. I may need to switch from coal to coke this summer for Demos and think I might need to have an idle air blast configuration to keep the coke going when I'm doing more talking than working. Also with either solid fuels it would be conscious to be able to more completely burn the smoke especially on start up; Jose's configuration with maybe with a little propane induced into the burner (air nozzle in the stack) on startup. Any who thanks again for the reply. Enough rambling, -grant
  8. Good morning SmothBore et-all First let me update the original post, including a thumbnail of the original rheostat The motor tag reads: Buffalo Motor Will operate on either direct of alternating current 25-40-50-60 cycles voltage same as rheostat which must always be used with motor No. 45050 Type 2E Buffalo forge Co Buffalo N.Y. I would like an updated variable speed motor. In Jose Gomez post "Super-Charged Side Draft Forge", Jose writes, "recently a friend of mine gave me a newly rebuilt giant electric Champion blower with a new variable speed motor that he had laying around". Included in this post are 2 thumbnails of Jose's forge. This is what gave me the idea that such a thing was possible. As SmothBore suggested the tag is of little help in deturming the hp of the motor or is operating RPM range. -grant
  9. Good Morning All Again, thank you for all the encouragement. These picks will show I didn't completely abandoned the site; walking off down the road chasing a lame turkey. We were a little down on lifting power, but when one is on the scrounge, one takes what one gets. Yes, I am very fortunate and need to repay the cosmos. -grant
  10. My thanks to all for the offer of storage space; I was sure I could count on you. Here are some pictures, a little further in. -grant
  11. Yes, this is the proverbial barn find. No I don't get to keep the barn, but surely there must be something in there we can use! -grant
  12. Good morning Mr. Gomez et-all: When you have a moment I have several questions about your now several year old forge. How is it working and with you experience would you (or did you) change anything. What is the diameter and number of blades and what motor and controller are you using. Et-all -has anyone build a similar system and what are your recommendations. -Thanks grant
  13. Good Morning All - It is to be hoped that this post finds everyone prosperous. I would like to update the motor and controller in this Buffalo Forge No. 2E electric blower, so I'm looking for guidance. I looked at Granger's Site and there are pages and pages of motors and most of it is Greek to me. The motor shaft is 12", I couldn't find a HP rating, but the tag did say it would run on anything including corn liquor. I don't know how the paddles are fixed to the shaft, but I can tear her down when that becomes an issue. Any help is appreciated. -grant
  14. Matt-O I'm glad you are making good use of your time. I think you are on to something - you should develop this into a new "fold-forming" technique or as an adjunct to Corky's Repousse. Either way it will make one grand DEMO. -grant
  15. John, this thread might be of interest to you. http://www.iforgeiro...side%20%20draft -grant
  16. Think about wrapping the gate around the post. There needs more integration between the post and gate elements in the closed position and this would fix that as well. The wrapped portion, especially the bottom, would move down the hill when the gate was opened and the toward the driveway, but this would eliminate the "gate fell off and we leaned it against the post look." It would be a fairly large loop to accommodate the movement and might get ungainly and obviously one would need to rework the hinges to set the gate proud of the post or put a jog in the hinge end of the gates. -grant
  17. Here is one. http://www.cvbg.org/anvilrepair699.pdf Mr Hofi process is post #13 on this thread - http://www.iforgeiro...h__1#entry21356 One can type "rob gunther" in the search section on this forum and get volumes. You need the quotes. -grant
  18. Good morning all insurance update I got a quote from the agency that advertises in The Anvils Ring, Industrial Coverage Corp, for liability coverage of 1 mil each occurrence with a 2 mil general aggregate for $425 per year. This covers the shop and demos. In addition there is 2 mil for products and completed operations, 1 mil for damage to rented premises and several other related items. The agency wrote the liability insurance through Hartford. I though it was a great deal and in line what what others on this thread have reported. There were no questions about what is being manufactured, so the weapon's issue was not an issue and although they advertise in the ABANA publication no-one ask if I was a member. I did need to stay after them, calling every couple days, but they were very cordial, helpful, and understanding. -grant
  19. Good morning all It is to be hoped this post finds you healthy and prosperous. I am in the process of trying to obtain general liability and content insurance for the shop and thought I would bump this thread and see if there were any updates. Steve what did you finally do? Failing this I absolutely need DEMO liability insurance for the summer, mid May through Labor Day. Thanks for your help -grant
  20. I don't think the stroke is adjustable at all. Obviously one can adjust the rod length with the turnbuckle and move the stroke's effect up or down and the beam travel could be increased or decreased by moving the rod/spring attachment point. Neither or those seem feasible to do on the run. Regardless it is a very cool hammer. -grant
  21. O'Callaghan - Oh Good your not dead; you just moved to Kearney! I got cold last winter with no one around to take pity on me and bring me wood. Talk to you soon. -grant
  22. At-a-boy Dave. Nicely done! -and thanks for sorting out the different diameters of anvil posts. -grant
  23. Dave -that is an impressive array of hammers. Are the anvils nested tube (6 1/2, 7 1/4 and 7 1/2)? I need to come up with an anvil for a treadle hammer and these look slick. -tks grant
  24. "I wouldn't try even one out of barstock because they're not at all bisemetrical which has advantages when forging leaves" MacBruce Good morning all -What means bisemetrical and how does it apply to forging leaves? -grant
  25. This is a spot on portable - grant http://www.blksmth.c...my_portable.htm
