  1. Hello, Vapermac, Splendid Fixture, and your happy customers are the Last Word for the quality of your work. After running through your images for the tenth time, I visualized dropping soft bushings (acetal, nylon, leather, etc.) over selected index pins to cushion delicate contact points or to index against asymmetric features. Very Flexible! When you say 'integral turning tool', do you mean as holder for turning tools, or (my guess) as a work holding fixture on a face plate or in a four jaw chuck? Or do I just need another cup of coffee?? Robert Taylor
  2. If only my shop had walls......
  3. I apologize for being a METOOFANBOY, Mr. Powers, but it's raining and I have the day off. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your prolific posts. I hope to see much more of your wit, and often. I am sure I annoy plenty of people, but I am trying to cut down. As you stated in your OP, all a feller has to do is push the button.
  4. Excellent piece. Beautiful Finish.
  5. Very appealing to the eye - a treasure made by Dad's hand.
  6. There is a great story, in my amateur opinion, that goes along with this 65#, 5" post vise. Perhaps some day I will tell that story. It belonged to the father of my aunt Sherry. Sadly, she passed away this morning. I had hoped to put it to work and give her a good report. It was a very special gift to me, made even more precious now. I know that soon it will bite glowing steel..... Lord wiliing and the creek don't rise.....
  7. While this ain't blacksmithing, there's a heck of a lot of hammering, as the lid on this Stainless water tank has to be bucked over with a ball peen hammer. I am proud to have survived doing that without crying on the clock. Robert Taylor
  8. While ill-equipped to speak to the preceding controversy, I will say, Timothy Miller, that I agree with your observation that it becomes very tedious to sort through the proliferating clutter that tends to overwhelm the "meat-and-potatoes" that many of us hunger for. Niel Blythin, I was headed in your direction in that I suggest that the task of INDEXING and CULLING would be extremely labor intensive: Once subjects begin to branch out into multiple sub-sets, the nightmare begins. And yes, Glenn, you can pin stuff to the top, and that may be the best one can do with such a large volume of posts/data. Robert Taylor
  9. 78sharpshooter, what's the trouble? my forge is staying cool.... Oh that's right, I don't have walls on my Smithy  As stated above, it's all about Positive Air Flow. If you don't have a window to mount a box fan in, you might hang one from the ceiling above head level, and then canted slightly. to blow downward. Nice looking tools, by the way. We in San Diego have some real Winter Weather Challenges - sometimes gets down to the high 20's - it's Rough. August in Phoenix?? yikes. Robert Taylor
  10. **Correction** After checking my work, I discovered a gross error of usage: Post #10: "I demur - not smart enough to find the pics." Post #20 "Rich, when you found me to be in error, I demurred." Definition: to take exception, to raise objections, to object..... The term demur is misused by me in these posts, and has the opposite meaning of what I wanted to say, which was: I withdraw, I acquiesce. That being said, the bottom line, Rich Hale, is that after reading thousands of your words on this Forum, and viewing your products online I have a high degree of respect for your aptitude, experience, and accomplishments. Robert Taylor
  11. Happy Birthday Frosty, Hope you're healing speedy! I always enjoy reading you posts. Best Wishes, Robert Taylor
  12. iforgeiron makes me smarter! Glenn, I have spent so much time reading posts on this forum, you might think that I am putting my marriage at risk, but for the fact that: Not to brag (but I guess that's what I'm doing) but my wife is pretty tolerant of my affliction: just a lucky guy, I guess.
  13. I told my brother the other day that I needed to put my forge blower on a foot pedal speed control. I wanted to have two hands on my work while dynamically varying the airflow. I found one concise reference on IFI by K. Bryan Morgan: But Brother John was way ahead of me: 0190.pdf There is much more to this, Never tell John you want to do something. He just goes nuts. On my way down the hill to fabricate the foot pedal/control linkage. Unlike a standard Shop Vac Monster, this thing is designed to run at the bottom end of the power curve, and thus, hopefully, will be Very Quiet!! Will keep you posted, Robert Taylor
  14. I would show you my drawings, but I'm a bit sensitive right now. Don't think I can handle the unbridled laughter. Actually, I'm seeing some cool stuff on here Glenn, thanks for starting a Neato Thread.
  15. That Anvil got 13 Horns! I see up to 12 Swage Profiles! And what njanvilman said.
  16. Rich, when you found me to be in error, I demurred. I did not see a link to the original post, and spent a bit of time searching for it. I tried to correct my speaking out of turn with work. I finally managed to find (and post) the image to which you referred in Post #11, and could not link to (I hope I got it right this time). I apologize for piping up in your blade forum. I am only a toolmaker, and the work you do is very high end (I also looked on your web site). I will not be taking blade classes for quite some time, as I am just getting to the basics. For me, this is simply a matter of getting lost in translation, not a slight of your contributions. As I may not speak for others I will only speak for myself. I see the value of your contributions, but only to the extent that my competence allows me to do so. I humbly hope you see the value in that. Robert Taylor
  17. I demur - not smart enough to find the pics.
  18. Also Branded as a 'Rotozip' tool.
  19. In my Dreams...... I'd be shakin that thing around for all to see!
  20. Don Shears - Sorry you had to see such a hack job - I have a special affection for mortise and tenon work - glad to hear you got some wrought iron out of the deal. Do post photos - that would be something to see. Robert Taylor
  21. Not a pulley as it is a continuous spiral groove? And I propose that it is a ball race. The holes are blind threaded 4-40, and I am guessing that they were index pins for timing the lathe operation. I just can't figure it out.
  22. Thanks Arftist, that was a big concern in my field. Any one else?
  23. All right then! I know there are a bunch of "engineer types" (the kind I like) hiding under that soot and scale. Got this Item for five bucks at Murphy's Junk Emporium in El Cajon. Before I transform (destroy) this thing into a cone mandrel, maybe someone could tell me what it really is: It is 5" in Dia. at the base x 12 - 3/4" long. Made of Soft Steel. The spiral groove has a +.250" circular profile, with a weird pitch: 3.0187 Grooves Per Inch. Conical taper is 12.5 Deg. My guess is that it got scrapped out during manufacture, and is thus an unfinished item. Come on - I bet Someone on this Forum even used to make these! My apology in advance for what I am getting ready to do to it :o
