It sounds like you would be better off starting your own website dedicated to pro bladesmiths where you could administrate it yourself to eliminate all the members and questions you don't want to see.

The 'A' makes it 1920.

It's very attractive but it's not really my style, so I won`t date it . Sorry, just a little corny humor in memory of Mr. Sarver. The serial number 48041 is from the 1941-1944 range according to Anvils in America. I would imagine that the plate that was riveted to the side was something along the lines of an asset tag for the business that it belonged to in the past.

There are some houses made out of flax straw bales here in Saskatchewan.

It looks like your anvil is from the 1901-1903 range (AIA states an anvils with a sn of 4507 was made in 1901).

Wow! Very impressive! Very nice work. That's a beast for sure. Kudos to all involved.

I repaired my large Peter Wright with Messer MG740 rod (very impact resistant - not very hard facing). We did localized preheating with a rosebud tip and I covered up the welds immediately with a batt of fiberglass insulation to prevent it from cooling too rapidly. Mr. Strasil provided me with this method (it is a blueprint here in IFI) and it has held up well for many of his repairs. It is also holding up well for my repairs.

Just an update, Tom Ferry posted on the NWBA website that Grant suffered an aortic aneurysm this morning.

Terrible news! I had the honor of meeting Grant this last summer when I visited Seattle and purchased some fantastic tongs from him. He always had realistic, down to earth, and sometimes frank advise for many areas. He always looked at things with a practical point of view. Rest in peace Mr. Sarver. Thank-you for all your contributions and knowledge over the last 3 years. I have had great pleasure reading your posts. I have learned a lot from you. You will be missed.

And how was he supposed to know this? His profile shows that he has been a member for under a month and I haven't seen and recent Hofi hammer sales on IFI.

Here's a question for those running a propane gasser in unheated shops. Do you ever get a lot of ice buildup in your shop due to the moisture that propane puts into the air?

I think what he does, he does well. He seems to admire the craftsmen of whatever he does. I remember episodes of Monster Garage where he compliments people whe could lay down a better tig bead than him, he had nothing but respect for the old-school hot rod builders and riviters and whoever else turned out some amazing work, no matter how mindless the general population might think it is. He has also designed some pretty cool pieces of equipment. His bikes changed the industry. His eye for design is pretty awesome. The old Villain bike he made is probably my favorite bike of all time. You might not think that he is a 'blacksmith'. To be fair, he's only been doing it for a couple of years (part time while he has been running a large business empire) so don't expect master level products from him -yet. Give him time and I think he will be making some pretty cool stuff in his forge. He produced a pretty cool bottle opener during that news spot so you can't say he just only likes to hit things with a big hammer. Bottom line is he is a TV personality (love him or hate him) who can actually walk the walk. There's a lot of hosts who just yap to the camera. Put a hammer or torch in their hands and they would be useless. Based on that fact alone I respect him. What he does with his personal life is none of my business.
