  6. hello, start with a 50 grit and progress up,but alot depends on what you have avalable.i think on a 2 x 72 it goes up to 2000 grit but on my 4 x 36 i get up to 320 localy.so i do alot of hand sanding.so see what's avalable and find what works for you.some of the professionals will chime in and get you pointed in the right direction, hope this helps, jimmy
  7. howdy, i use non foaming hydrolic oil that i heat up to about 140f. works well for me,jimmy
  8. on things like chisels, etc. the striking end should not be hard.also watch it and grind off any mushroom to keep it from fragmenting.if you forge tools just don't harden the striking end.if worried about bought tools. heat the striking end red hot and let it cool.(non air hardening steel)but another thing that can be done is use a brass hammer.just some ideas, jimmy
  9. howdy boys, and welcome to IFI, lots of good info here and plenty of folks to ask, we have a chat room so drop by when you can. jimmy
  10. hello ben, they don't have enough carbon to hold a good edge, but there is a brine quench some use to harden low carbon steel. i would just heat it up and quench in ice water and no temper. that will harden it up some, hope this helps, jimmy

  12. i guess when it rains it pours, hope the weather cooperates for ya'll.jimmy
  13. well,i hear that the actual bearings are 52100 but the races can be case hardened. but that's hear say i nad a drawknife out of a outer race of a compound bearing and it worked well. but it is a bear cat to work. but don't let that discourage you, some ways to tell (from my experience)if cracked,it will crack across the race,or it may chip if driven out. or if you have to wash it out you will have to blow it in two, anyway i hope this helps ya out, jimmy
  14. that looks real good to me.but i hope it don't turn into a quick draw rollin pin holster when ya mouth off to the lil lady but it rilly is nice, thanks for showin us,jimmy
  15. rest easy, and peace to those left behind. jimmy & mary
  16. hey mite,i make knives out of them but have used them for free standing bases for a grinder and have made cowboy woks out of a few.from what i have read they are 1080 steel. and take a fine edge.i'm sure outhers will chime in on outher ideas, jimmy
  17. howdy, all i have is single speeds.i have a 4 x 36 belt with a 6" disc about a 100$ at lowes, but at the time they had a 6 x 48 with a bigger motor on it. but what you need to look for is belt avalibility, if $ isn't an issue look at the KMG grinder. lots of options out there, but i'd say get what you can afford and have fun.but wide belts sean to work better for me in keeping the bevel the same, aqny way have fun and best of luck, jimmy
  18. very nice work ms. hofilooing forward to more of it.jimmy
  19. looks good kb, i made a couple out of 3/8 sq. and rivited them...but i used hi grade rivits...(read 16d nails cut to length)and so far no problems. but they are the shorter ones 18-20" for bbq's and such. keep on keepin om, jimmy
