  1. From Wikipedia; A shim is a thin and often tapered or wedged piece of material, used to fill small gaps or spaces between objects.[1] Shims are typically used in order to support, adjust for better fit, or provide a level surface. Shims may also be used as spacers to fill gaps between parts subject to wear. I wouldn't want to "take lightly" a previously unknown "shop tip" from a more qualified/experienced craftsman.
  2. Hi ausfire, yes that's snow out the window but it's not as cold as it looks, about mid 40's f.
  3. Das your skull ture is coming along great. Gotta be fun!
  4. I certainly empathize with each of your responses. However, Jim's fix seems fairly straight forward, so to tolerate an imperfection when the resolution is right in front of your face seems illogical.
  5. I'll stop by this afternoon or tomorrow. I live 30 miles from goodwill but I ran out of oxygen and need to replace that tank so I may end up in town.
  6. Thanks Jim, I will give that a try.
  7. Today I got the vise put back together. It's functioning well but as you can see there is a little problem with the jaws.
  8. Today I installed two of the three feather tufts. I didn't have enough spoon handles so I'll have to wait to do the third.
  9. Today I began building the topknot for the falcon hood. I used two nuts welded atop each other and the butt of a butter knife handle. I decided to bolt the topknot to the hood instead of welding as the sheet metal is so thin. I still have a few feather tufts to add.
  10. ausfire, Tom and Tina are totally cute. good on ya
  11. And you will want to work long stock even if you don't think so today.
  12. Thomas, I will give that a try on similar sheet metal scrapes. I hope you have solved my concern. Das, "going to make the rest of the falcon?" I don't know, I have given doing so some passing thought. I am going to finish the hood and see where it takes me. I will post on this thread.
  13. That's great Das. What are you doing to clean up your parts?
  14. I have been wanting to make a falcon hood out of steel for awhile now. I worked on it a little yesterday and a little more today. The following is how I did it. The sheet metal is salvaged from a 1940's era sheet metal kitchen cabinet. The metal is very thin and I had a heck of a time welding it without burning the thing up, Oxy/Acetylene was the best method for me.
  15. Hey! Das ausfire, I have learned the difference between flatware and hollowware. The last hollowware handle I sawed off was filled with fiber glass. My practice is to discard the hollowware handles, they are not worth the effort. The stainless steel flatware handles are generally heavy enough to be forged without causing cold shuts (hot dog sticks).
  16. Some folks on here have been having too much fun with bug art lately so just thought I would jump in for a bit
  17. Flankem, yes the screw is in excellent condition. Very fortunate all the pieces are sound. Lots of rust but no rot.
  18. I finally got this beast taken apart. It was really seized up. All the parts look to be fine condition. Ill clean it up and make a stand for it.
  19. " A din of bad tempered, difficult, cantankerous, hammer heads. "
  20. Skill, knowledge, experience, judgment, and work ethic, these things are intangibles, worth more than money.
