  1. I do not always wear gloves. If I do it is usually only on my tong hand. Most of the time they are in my back pocket if needed. Just a pair of inexpensive leather work gloves. I have a couple pair of welding gloves. I don't use them much but they are sure nice to have if you need them... Jerry
  2. I watched the YouTube video. For safety sake, you should only have your cutoff tools on the anvil when they are actually in use. I am sure it would be difficult to make that nail in one heat if you were missing several fingers from you hammer hand. Remember, stay safe. Accidents happen way too quickly. Jerry
  3. You might want to check out Gas forges - Blacksmith forges and knifemaker forges guaranteed to forge weld - Chileforge.com He is out of Wimberly, Texas. He was at the Balcones Forge meeting last Saturday and had his single burner forge. He also sells a couple of different two burner forges, all of which can be found on his website. He said that they will reach welding temps without a problem. I personally have zero experience with propane. Hope this helps, Jerry
  4. They are both out of the hindquarter. The t-bone is from the front end of the hindquarter. The porterhouse is the next cut but before the sirloin. The smaller tender part of the t-bone is the tenderloin (which would be the backstrap). As far as grilling on the 4th. I have a beef brisket that we will smoke but, since that will take many hours, I may need one of the t-bones to keep up my strength. Have a safe holiday, Jerry
  5. I use vegetable shortening on my dutch ovens. The ovens are placed on the coals with others placed directly on the lid. After use and cleaning a fresh coat is all it needs. Jerry
  6. "pochodzi z gry krzycząc". Mary Kiolbassa (My Polish Grandmother) Translated - From playing comes crying Jerry
  7. I have a wire welder and have had problems with the wire feed. I found that I had a nick in the wire spool and when the wire ran to the edge it would catch in the nick. I removed the spool and filed the nick. Have not had any more problems.... Jerry
  8. We learn a lot by watching and doing. It is amazing though, how much we can learn about blacksmithing and it's history by listening. It is great to listen to some of the more experienced blacksmiths at their demos. Keep up the good work, Jerry
  9. Archie, I have seen the points on the steak turners a couple of different ways. I have made a few and I will put a long socket in the post vise of the diameter that I want the hook. I will heat the turner and bend the point around the socket making a half turn. I will reheat the end of the turner and quickly place it in the vise and bend it to 90 degrees. This has worked well for me. These are right handed and I will turn the point the other way for a left handed turner. Hope this helps, Jerry

  11. No, we didn't BBQ the rattler. I figured the buzzards need to eat too. I am not saying that I wouldn't. I will save that for when the cows and chickens are gone. Just not hungry enough to want to. Lately we have been hearing turkeys in the early morning. Jerry
  12. Philip, Our thoughts and prayers are with you and those around you. Hope you are well. Jerry
  13. I use coke for my fire. Is the ash and clinker that is produced harmful to the environment? I am never short of potholes but, would not want to put this down if it was going to cause EPA problems in the future... Thanks, Jerry
  14. Nice work. Nice grass too. If we would get some rain maybe we could grow some.....
