  1. Hello, My name is Jerry. I live in Devine, Texas. About 30 minutes south of San Antonio. We live on a small farm. I am on my 29th year as a San Antonio Firefighter. I have had a longtime interest in the art of Blacksmithing but, I was working two jobs to provide for my family. The kids are grown and out of the house and I quit my part time job of Locksmith (25 years) about 6 months ago. About a year ago I joined Balcones Forge. I am totally amazed at the willingness of fellow blacksmiths to share their knowledge. I signed up here at IFI about a month ago and have spent much of my spare time soaking up the information provided. Though I have only been at this for a short time, I do have one recommendation for those with an interest. Join your local blacksmithing groups. There are a lot of great people very willing to help. So far I pretty much make scrap out of good steel. On occasion something happens and I amaze myself. I greatly enjoy an appreciate the work that goes into this site. What an asset. Jerry W.
  2. I am a new subscriber. I have received two issues so far. Right now it is beyond my capabilities but, I hope to grow into it.. Jerry
  3. I use coke to fire my forge. It does produce some clinker. I can tell that it needs to be cleaned out when I can't keep a good hot fire. I usually take a rod and run it to the bottom of the coke pot and push the clinker to the top so that I can remove it with tongs. The clinker has a obviously different appearance than the coke. Jerry
  4. Fire can be extinguished by the removal of heat, fuel or oxygen. It can also be extinguished by interrupting the exchange of free radicals. This is how baking soda extinguishes a grease fire or a standard ABC fire extinguisher.
  5. The video was very enlightening. I do this because I enjoy it. I do not need it to provide an income to feed my family. I am wanting more and better tools. Kind of makes one feel selfish. Maybe thankful.
  6. I too greatly appreciate the information and education that I can access through the site. I am new to Blacksmithing. I enjoy a successful project. Mostly though I make scrap out of good metal. I have improved though and with practice and schooling I feel that I can greatly improve. Please keep up the good work.... Thanks, Jerry
