  1. Thank you guys! The head does not open bottles, but that would have been sick. The ring would have also been a neat idea, oh well, next time I think this is my best one yet too... until this upcoming bowie, but you'll have to wait another week or so for that one ;P
  2. San mai blade of 1095 core, random pattern shell, and pure nickle shims. Bolster and butt cap are 3D printed cast copper, designed to sport a pigs head and squiggly tail. The cutting board and knife holder was made by Eugene Manigo, owner of Kambui Custom Craft in Brooklyn - both the board and handle are reclaimed walnut and teak with new purpleheart. This is the first completed knife using my friend and fellow knifemaker's, Jann Muchnikoph, 23 ton press; what a wonderful tool! Comments and critique always welcome, Theo
  3. Neat find. Any sketches of what you want to do to it?
  4. WOW! That is a great second knife, you should be proud. Makes me think the Counter Strike games for some reason. I agree that the finger holes could probably be softened a bit, but if it's for yourself you will be the best judge of how much. Doesn't hurt to try using it... unless it literally hurts, in which case you'll have a lot of sanding to do, haha If you filed in the deep jimping before HT it might spell trouble with that deep belly/choil - stress risers love places like those.
  5. Really diggin the profile, especially the coffin handle
  6. Come join us for the very first hammer in at Metal Shop Fantasy Camp! We will have several demonstrations by familiar faces in the metalwork, blacksmithing, and knifemaking fields, as well as the opportunity for local makers to set up tables to sell their goods at. Admission is free, and children ten and up are welcome. If you're interested in demonstrating or setting up a table please let me know message. We'll keep yall updated as demonstrators and people sign up - Jason Knight has just come on board to do a demo of one of his blades. Metal Shop Fantasy Camp 175 Bogart St, Brooklyn, New York 11206 Sunday February 12, 2017 at 9 AM - 4 PM Hope to see you there!
  7. They need a couple welding classes added to their roster - any recommendations on simple fab projects that beginners could pull off in a couple hours?
  8. Oh, haha, my bad, I misread what your wrote
  9. They look great! What else have you made since them?
  10. I am happy to say that I just got a new job managing, organizing, and teaching knifemaking, blacksmithing, and metal fabrication classes in Brooklyn! Metal Shop Fantasy Camp (I didn't choose the name, haha) currently offers introduction to metalwork and welding classes, and I am coming on to add beginner knifemaking and blacksmithing classes. I got the position because of the success of my test-run of the "Forge your own bottle opener" classes, and am now going to be able to offer a wider range including several types of knife making classes. Classes start in a couple weeks, I will follow up with more specific information when the schedule is solidified, but in the meanwhile I need your help with recommendations for what sort of classes would interest you or you think would be popular. Additionally, anyone interested (or knows someone that might be) in coming to guest teach or demonstrate should let me know. Jason Knight and Tom Ward have expressed interest, so we already have a great start! Can't wait to get the community's opinion, Theo
  11. Looks like alloy banding. If you got that 80CrV2 from Aldo he'll send you fresh steel for free - Tom had a similar issue with some of his 80CrV2 knives we heat treated at my forge
  12. Haha, that was just a wire brush disk for taking off the epoxy after I cast the bolster.
  13. Yeah man, just popped a new one up yesterday https://youtu.be/_RCZGv7ylD8
  14. Hmm, I may have gotten lucky; as part of the cast bolster process the handle was rough shaped then essentially slathered in epoxy, and of course the block was drilled out and filled from the inside. It's not the same as stabilization, but it would plug those immediate pores.
  15. Yet another! https://youtu.be/_RCZGv7ylD8
  16. The teak and walnut were both heavily seasoned (taken from old furniture and whatnot), the purpleheart is relatively fresh, so there may some sort of issue down the road if it's left in a moist environment or the polyurethane is rubbed off and it's left exposed.
  17. This blade was forged from a large Nicholson file, so it is quality W1 high carbon steel. Handle is a stacked twisted mosaic wood of purpleheart, reclaimed teak, and reclaimed walnut. Bolster is cast mica powder and G-Flex epoxy. I had a lot of fun with this guy, it's a little all over the place, but I like how busy it is.
  18. Have you been testing the hardness on these stainless knives you've been quenching in oil? A general rule of thumb with stainless is to send it out for heat treat... how are you accurately controlling ramping, and what are you using to tell temperature?
  19. It's perfectly legal to have large blades and swords in your home. Transporting them it where things get sticky; they need to be properly bagged/encased and securely locked in a sealed container, transported in a way where access is obviously not swift. My forge is split between a metal fab shop and a lasercutting/cnc shop where there are established businesses, so I get no grief
  20. These are some great firsts! The Complete Bladesmith was how I started too, it's a great resource. Come visit me in Brooklyn, we'll fire up the forge and talk about knives
