  1. I had them saved and ready to go, haha I bought a dog from a blacksmith. As soon as I got him home he made a bolt for the door. John was looking for work, and his mate told him that they needed someone up at the blacksmith's. John went to see the smithy and said, "My mate tells me you're looking for someone to work here." "Yes, that's right." said the Blacksmith, "Can you shoe horses?" "I'm not sure," said John, "but I once told a donkey to get lost." Q: Why was the near-deaf smith in the lingerie store? A: He heard there was a huge sale on designer tongs. Q: Why do people always have to stop and watch a blacksmith do his work? A: He was riveting. Why was the steel angry? It lost its temper. Want to hear a blacksmithing joke? Nevermind, i forgot the punch line. Why was the blacksmith arrested? The police were told he was forging art. Why couldn't the bladesmith go food shopping before heat treat? There was no martinsite (mart in sight) What's the best anvil base? I don't know, I was asking you cuz I'm stumped How important are guards? They can be integral. How does the blacksmith look when he's all dressed to the nail for a date? Smashing!
  2. That is a myth, they couldn't pull that off with people who already make so little, haha I told about a dozen jokes during the taping, some so much funnier, and instead they go with me cursing up a storm... it was funny though
  3. The hada is the presentation of the blade's steel; the layer count, pattern, and hamon together. I received 8 pieces of 1095, and since I knew I could forge weld them all perfectly there would be no visible layering, so instead I focused on my hamon.
  4. I just happen to use 3D printing and casting in a lot of my blades
  5. Haha, yeah, there was no time to 3D print and cast any parts, would have loved a menuki. "Beat" Walter, sure, I'll take it ;P
  6. Thanks guys! Honestly, I never would have thought they'd use all the footage with me cursing under my breath in it, but what the xxxx, why not? I am lucky I didn't have to face Walter in the final challenge
  7. It's funny, I was thinking something along the same lines using grass with the roots still on and the ashes added as the "soil" it's growing from
  8. This has been a prototype I've been developing for a while and am happy to finally show off! Waterjet cut then forged 5160 blade with integral guard. Handle window contains dried autumn leaves suspended in alumilite. Next I'll be working on different versions of this with various blade styles and handle materials ranging from crushed egg shells to solid cocobolo to antler. Leme know what yall think!
  9. Read through the knifemaking classes http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/143-knife-making-classes/
  10. Haha, it'll also speak: "did you read the pinned class for it?"
  11. It's been tough to keep it in, but finally I can announce that I will be on Forged In Fire episode 14, which will air on the History Channel January 31st at 10pm EST/9pm CS So xxxxxx excited, being on the show has been a dream of mine for a while, and you can imagine how difficult it's been not to tell everyone I meet even strangers on the subway. Wooooooo!
  12. Hi everyone! Our upcoming hammer in has several folks booked for demonstrations, however we're pushing it back to the February 12 to better accommodate both demonstrators and visitors. So come join us on February 12 as folks demonstrate blacksmithing, knifemaking, and fabrication! We're also looking for local artists and craftsmen to set up tables to show off and sell their arts and wares. If you are interested ina a table let me know and we'll set you up!
  13. Optimus is dead, no wait he's floating in space, no wait he's a knife now
  14. Another fantastic batch!
  15. Carbon steel nuts, bolts, and chopped up gear stock welded in a canister with 1095 and nickle powder, forge-welded-on random pattern 1080 and 1095 cutting edge. Hidden tang ebony handle with 3D printed cast bronze guard and medallions. The Nazz logo is hidden in the medallions. I've been having a lot of fun with canister damascus recently; I think I'll try to perfect this pattern a bit more, I really like where it's going... not quite there yet though, I want to find smaller carbon steel gearstock, nuts, and bolts. Could have welded on the edge a bit more cleanly - next time I think I'll go with a twisted edge, feels more appropriate for the theme.
  16. Another pair of fantastic users, hope he puts it to good use!
  17. Beautiful! The matching guard is a great touch
  18. There's a long stem that comes out from under it that sockets into the handle, nice n solid
