CrazyGoatLady
Maybe it's Memorex....
Marc1
Looking again at the last of your new pictures, I think that the anvil was mounted sideways, welded against something. The feet on the same side of the mystery mark seem to indicate welding all on the one side to have it mounted against a structure or similar situation. Steven Mcclellan
Yeah maybe I don’t know it crazy anti but the mystery marks are raised out from the body of the anvil and the too circle are to if you look close on the other side you can see the same square vaguely on the other side of the body
Stash
The mystery image looks like a magnetic switch. Maybe it was one of the experimental electric anvils. Steve
Steven Mcclellan
Are you kidding or did they make a electric anvil what could a electric anvil do
Frosty
Sorry Steven but we voted not to tell you about electric and atomic powered anvils a while back. The symbol on the side of that anvil is obviously a double 1 domino. Okay guys you can stop joshing with Steven now, we don't want to run him off. Frosty The Lucky. I always preferred TDK, but TDK never had a good commercial line like Memorex did. Definitely an electric anvil, it must have short circuited though to blow such a big hole in it. CrazyGoatLady
Oh yeah TDKs were good. Sony made pretty good tapes too. Lots of high school mix tapes... that was awhile back
Marc1
Yes ... electric anvils are great. They have an electro-magnet hovering over the anvil to increase rebound. You can adjust the pull with a dial drilled in the body of the anvil ...
SLAG
Marc1, And is that electro-magnet suspended, above the anvil, by a "sky hook"? Just curious. SLAG.
Marc1
Absolutely, you got it. If you dial the magnetic field just right, you can hit your work and bounce the hammer all the way up and down again effortlessly, demonstrating once more the value of rebound. I believe the magnetic field is synchronised with a timer and a on-off switch like a rotating distribuitor to allow for repeat strikes at different intervals, from slow poco to crazy machinegun Mac
SLAG
Marc 1, Profound; as per usual. SLAG.
Stash
Actually the magnetic field is synched via an adjustable photo cell. When set up properly, you feel like you're in a Farraday cage, at one with the energy field. This is why Edison was so upset with Tesla. Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
That would depend upon where in the world you are located, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show your location.
tanglediver
Adjustable photocell? I thought it'ld be controlled via proximity detector, that way you simply approach the anvil and it powered up. But, I dunno, maybe they didn't want to do any smithery after dark, ergo the photocell.
Steven Mcclellan
WOW you guys are the best
ThomasPowers
You can laugh, but when those subzero forging days are here; my electric anvil is nice and cosy warm! (Or would be if I had electricity to my shop....unloading all the tools from teaching at the U last night in the dark was "interesting". The students handling the anvils used a cell phone to light up the area when they showed up. (Why yes, I did leave the anvils and stumps for them...killed off all those slow brain cells when I was younger...)
Steven Mcclellan
I heard that there a lot of interesting things about blacksmithing
