I found this forged item in a farm shed.

I have an idea what it is, but id just like to hear other peoples opinion's.

Love to hear your thoughts...

I believe Mr. Stevens is right.  Before I read his post, I thought, 'Beam Holder for a Hoist'?

Maybe its a home made fly press? a REALLY weird one?

I'll go for a snatchblock.

Frosty The Lucky.

Greetings ,

That makes 3...  Its a snatchblock..  The hooks are designed to accept a rope loop and it most likely had a wood pulley.   Just my 2c .. Nice find...   Also in the design was the breakaway feature that allows it to be installed on an straight line..  That's what the links are for..

Makes sense. I was wondering about the hook.

Hi Jim and everyine else who replied,
I was guessing it was some kind of a pulley. But pullys normally have just one hook to hang of a beam? I agree that there was probably a wooden wheel in the centre and held there with a centre pin. This pin would revolve on the little riveted brackets at each side as an extra support? Seems to be wear marks on them from the revolving centre pin.You mentioned a breakaway feature.. im struggling to picture how this would be. Would it be possible for you to draw a very rough sketch on both ideas? Sorry.....just very interested in it. The little hole at the bottom has me puzzled too...
Thanks in advance,
Declan.

I'll agree with the pulley idea.  I've seen ram's horn hooks like that on a few old pulleys.  Neat to see them reinforcing/enlarging the seat for the pulley axle like they did.  That's a new one on me.

Wouldn't stress too much on the hole in the bottom piece.  The whole thing looks "farm-made" and they might just have used a piece of scrap that happened to have a hole in it from whatever it was used for prior to becoming a pulley.

Jim, what in the world are you talking about with a break-away and straight line?  I'm not saying you're wrong because I haven't a clue what you're trying to say.  Maybe I heard of it by another name....

I believe he means that it was engineered so you could remove the pins and take one side off to insert the rope onto the pully without having to thread the entire length over the pully.  Very handy when you are adding a pully to a system alread tied off on the ends. (or have large ends that might not fit)
