I am sorry to post this but I have just received word that one of my oldest and dearest friends in Blacksmithing community Toby Hickman died suddenly earlier today . I have no other details other then his wife Anne has asked to please allow her privacy at this time and not call . There is to much to say about Toby at the moment for me other than he was a great and dear friend to us all and will be sorely missed .

This was posted by Michael Bondi on the CBA facebook page.

This is a huge loss to the blacksmithing community. Toby was an inspiration and wealth of knowledge to many, myself included. I will miss him and his great booming voice at CBA gatherings. RIP my friend!

I did not know him personally, but he was a presence at many ABANA conferences and an amazing talent.  RIP.

He was the Demostrator and teacher at the Spring Meet of the New England Blacksmiths this past May for three days a really nice gentleman, instructor and human.  He will be dearly missed by many.

I met him at a demo years ago - what a great loss! RIP and prayers to his family...

Toby was one of the greats in the blacksmith community.  I remember meeting him several times at CBA conferences and he was always interested in my work and encouraging.  He was a no non-sense guy that was a true artist and craftsman.  He will be missed.  RIP friend.

He was a big man in many ways.  What a loss.  I always wanted to take one of his class but it never worked out and now it never can.  I had called him about a question on one of his videos.  He was so kind and helpful and patient.

Last saw him in Rapid City where he recieved his well deserved Alex Bealer Award. Glad we got to visit one last time on such a happy occasion.

Oyyya oyyya oyyya you will be missed

My anvil will ring in his honor.

I will ring my anvil...  He will be missed...

Met him last year I Placerville CA at the CBA Spring Conferance. He really knew his way around a powerhammer! I'm really glad I bought his DVD on powerhammer use directly from him.
Going to miss his style of instruction that captured your attention!

I am going to ring every anvil, and a couple power hammers in honor of the big guy! He really was a great man. May God bless his family in these trying times.

Great guy will be missed...I met him one year at Gichener's January Gathering, he did a great demo

I met him yrs ago at his shop in Petaluma. He had a great way of encouraging new smiths and I remember seeing & hearing him on his power hammer. My anvil will also ring in memory of him. Prayers & thoughts to his family at this difficult time.
