August 18, 201312 yr Forged iron and bronze, one horizontal movement, 36"H x 34"W x 28"D. I built this for the Barker competition in hopes of winning a commission for the new visual art building at UAB.
August 18, 201312 yr Fansastic, I like the spherical form you gave it also, ready to use it for the movie Hunger games?
August 18, 201312 yr Greetings Danger, Wow ... I don't think most can relate the size.. 36in tall. That's a lot of work.. With all the forging you maintained the surface and texture. I know how hard that is.. You for sure have my vote.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
August 18, 201312 yr Looks really good, I hope that it get's you the commission! However if it doesn't you still have a piece that is "gallery worthy" Ian
August 18, 201312 yr Author Thanks! To give you an idea of scale the base is the 2" x 10" I was forging in the steam hammer thread. A sculpture built from this model would be 9' tall and would also move, perhaps on a babbitt bearing. After Aileron I have been searching for a better scale to build my work, I think just over human scale will bring more intimacy and would better allow opportunity to explore surface deformation with the tools I have. Ouroboros was inspired by this model I had made of a figure, which seems to be in an embrace and a departure. This ambiguity of the direction of its flight really intrigues me, is Ouroboros looping in or looping out?
August 18, 201312 yr I like those rivets, well I actually like the whole thing. Now don't take this wrong but somehow it reminds me of a hood ornament from the fifties. There were some really graceful ones from that period and some not so graceful. After a little more thought it maybe one from the thirties, when they made really expensive cars like the Rolls Royce and others had high class radiator caps with the work done by some of the world class sculptors of the time. That is a well done piece, very well done.
August 18, 201312 yr Sweet sculpture! The proportions, materials and joinery are all spot on. Another great one, good luck in the competiton.
August 19, 201312 yr SWEET piece! I'm at a loss for what to say that won't just be flapping my gums. Frosty The Lucky.
August 19, 201312 yr Author I appreciate all the comments, I think you nailed it Jerry. I have been ornamenting most of my career, sculpture is no different. I am trying to bring a bit of worth to public sculpture which I think has been lost in many pieces today. In the end I am trying to inspire and be inspired... Thanks again, Michael
August 19, 201312 yr Oh that's wonderful. Graceful is a word that comes to mind. There's a lovely flow to the work. Best of luck in the comp there Danger
August 19, 201312 yr Grand work Mr Dillon! Have you coated it with some clear sealer? Or will its weather?
August 19, 201312 yr Very nice. Simple but elegant. It has a nice flow to it. Good luck in the competition.
August 20, 201312 yr Author Grand work Mr Dillon! Have you coated it with some clear sealer? Or will its weather? Just wax, this one will probably live inside.
August 28, 201312 yr Great work! Let me know when to vote. I'll vote for you! It would look great on a hood of a classic car!
August 28, 201312 yr I like this one! It makes me think of scissor-tailed flycatchers... which I often see near Branson. I saw one in Idaho once... crying and flying all over the city! I think it was very lost! They do not normally inhabit Idaho. Impressive looking birds! Like yours!
October 7, 201312 yr Author Some better pics, I didn't win the compitition but it will get built someday, I'll just add it to the list!
