Dillon Sculpture Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Forged iron and bronze, one horizontal movement, 36"H x 34"W x 28"D. I built this for the Barker competition in hopes of winning a commission for the new visual art building at UAB. Quote
macbruce Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 You've got my vote, nice work........ B) Quote
therepairman1557 Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Very nice looks like you have a good chance with that one. Quote
Steve Sells Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Fansastic, I like the spherical form you gave it also, ready to use it for the movie Hunger games? Quote
Marksnagel Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Beautiful work. If my vote counted, it would be yours. Quote
Jim Coke Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Greetings Danger, Wow ... I don't think most can relate the size.. 36in tall. That's a lot of work.. With all the forging you maintained the surface and texture. I know how hard that is.. You for sure have my vote.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim Quote
ianinsa Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Looks really good, I hope that it get's you the commission! However if it doesn't you still have a piece that is "gallery worthy" Ian Quote
Dillon Sculpture Posted August 18, 2013 Author Posted August 18, 2013 Thanks! To give you an idea of scale the base is the 2" x 10" I was forging in the steam hammer thread. A sculpture built from this model would be 9' tall and would also move, perhaps on a babbitt bearing. After Aileron I have been searching for a better scale to build my work, I think just over human scale will bring more intimacy and would better allow opportunity to explore surface deformation with the tools I have. Ouroboros was inspired by this model I had made of a figure, which seems to be in an embrace and a departure. This ambiguity of the direction of its flight really intrigues me, is Ouroboros looping in or looping out? Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 I like those rivets, well I actually like the whole thing. Now don't take this wrong but somehow it reminds me of a hood ornament from the fifties. There were some really graceful ones from that period and some not so graceful. After a little more thought it maybe one from the thirties, when they made really expensive cars like the Rolls Royce and others had high class radiator caps with the work done by some of the world class sculptors of the time. That is a well done piece, very well done. Quote
kustomsteel Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Sweet sculpture! The proportions, materials and joinery are all spot on. Another great one, good luck in the competiton. Quote
Frosty Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 SWEET piece! I'm at a loss for what to say that won't just be flapping my gums. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
Dillon Sculpture Posted August 19, 2013 Author Posted August 19, 2013 I appreciate all the comments, I think you nailed it Jerry. I have been ornamenting most of my career, sculpture is no different. I am trying to bring a bit of worth to public sculpture which I think has been lost in many pieces today. In the end I am trying to inspire and be inspired... Thanks again, Michael Quote
HIGHSIDER Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Oh that's wonderful. Graceful is a word that comes to mind. There's a lovely flow to the work. Best of luck in the comp there Danger Quote
MLMartin Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Grand work Mr Dillon! Have you coated it with some clear sealer? Or will its weather? Quote
jawno Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Very nice. Simple but elegant. It has a nice flow to it. Good luck in the competition. Quote
Dillon Sculpture Posted August 20, 2013 Author Posted August 20, 2013 Grand work Mr Dillon! Have you coated it with some clear sealer? Or will its weather? Just wax, this one will probably live inside. Quote
Paul Crosby Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Great work! Let me know when to vote. I'll vote for you! It would look great on a hood of a classic car! Quote
bigfootnampa Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 I like this one! It makes me think of scissor-tailed flycatchers... which I often see near Branson. I saw one in Idaho once... crying and flying all over the city! I think it was very lost! They do not normally inhabit Idaho. Impressive looking birds! Like yours! Quote
Camero68 Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Wonderful art work! It sure looks like a winner to me. Quote
Dillon Sculpture Posted October 7, 2013 Author Posted October 7, 2013 Some better pics, I didn't win the compitition but it will get built someday, I'll just add it to the list! Quote
